Six Feared Dead as Boat Capsizes in Lagos Waterway, Four Rescued
At least six passengers have been confirmed dead following a tragic boat accident along the Igbologun axis of Lagos waterways, while four others were rescued alive, Akahi News has learnt.
The incident, which occurred late on Tuesday night, reportedly involved a passenger boat operated by Savvy Marine and en route from Ilashe Beach House. The vessel reportedly capsized around 8:35 pm, throwing its occupants into the water and triggering an emergency response from relevant authorities.

What Happened
According to information jointly released by the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) and the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), the boat encountered trouble while navigating the channel near Nigerdock.
Preliminary findings, according to officials, suggest that the vessel may have collided with a submerged object, though investigations are still ongoing to determine the exact cause of the mishap.
“Four passengers were successfully rescued and taken to a nearby hospital where they are receiving medical attention,” the agencies disclosed in a joint statement. “Sadly, six bodies have been recovered so far, while search and rescue operations continue.”
Emergency Response and Investigation
Akahi News gathered that emergency responders were swiftly mobilised to the scene after distress alerts were raised. Rescue teams worked through the night, combing the waters in an effort to locate missing passengers.
Authorities assured the public that a full investigation would be carried out to establish responsibility and prevent future occurrences. They also reiterated their commitment to strengthening safety standards across Lagos waterways, which remain a vital transport corridor for many residents.
Condolences and Safety Assurance
LASWA and NIWA extended their condolences to the families of the deceased, describing the incident as tragic and deeply regrettable. They further urged boat operators and passengers to adhere strictly to safety regulations, including the use of life jackets and compliance with approved navigation routes.
Observers say the recurring incidents on inland waterways underscore the need for stricter enforcement, better vessel maintenance, and improved monitoring systems to avert avoidable loss of lives.
As investigations continue, Akahi News will provide updates as more details emerge.
