In his reflection for Sunday, 7th of June, 2026, Rev. Fr Pius Odediran has called on Christians to deepen their understanding of the Eucharist as the true presence of Christ and the source of unity, eternal life, and spiritual nourishment.
Speaking on the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ, the priest drew attention to the continuity between God’s provision for Israel in the wilderness and the gift of Christ in the Eucharist.
God’s Provision in the Wilderness
Reflecting on the first reading, Rev. Fr Odediran recalled how Moses instructed the Israelites to always remember the manna and water provided by God during their journey through the desert.
He noted that despite human complaints and ingratitude, God remained faithful in sustaining His people, guiding them safely towards the Promised Land.
According to him, this same divine care continues today, as God still provides for human needs even in moments of helplessness and doubt.
The Eucharist as the True Body of Christ
Turning to the second reading, the priest explained St. Paul’s teaching to the Corinthians, stressing that the Bread shared in the Eucharist is not ordinary food but the real Body of Christ.
He warned against indiscipline and abuse in the celebration of the Lord’s Supper, noting that the Eucharist is meant to build unity within the Church as the Body of Christ.
Quoting the Apostle, he emphasised: “Because there is one Bread, we who are many are one Body.” This, he said, highlights the deep spiritual communion among believers.
Christ, the Living Bread from Heaven
In the Gospel reflection, Rev. Fr Odediran pointed to Jesus’ declaration as the “living Bread that came down from heaven,” linking it to the manna in the wilderness.
Unlike the manna that sustained physical life temporarily, he said, Christ offers Himself as the Bread that gives eternal life.
He stressed that participation in the Eucharist is not symbolic alone but a real sharing in the life of Christ, which strengthens faith and unites believers with God and one another.
Call to Reverence and Transformation
The priest further urged the faithful to approach the Eucharist with repentance, preparation, and reverence, highlighting the Church’s teaching on the Real Presence of Christ through transubstantiation.
He encouraged Catholics to spend time in Eucharistic adoration, describing it as a moment of deep encounter with God.
According to him, those who receive Holy Communion worthily become “Christ-bearers,” called to reflect Christ in their daily lives through love, forgiveness, humility, and service.
A Call to Renewed Faith
Rev. Fr Odediran concluded by reminding the faithful that each Mass is both a sacrifice and a moment of transformation, where believers encounter Christ anew.
He urged Christians not to doubt the mystery of the Eucharist but to respond like Peter: “Lord, to whom shall we go?”
