Southern Governors and Traditional Rulers Meet in Iperu, Adopt Major Security and Regional Cooperation Resolutions

Southern governors and traditional rulers from the South-West, South-East, and South-South zones of Nigeria convened in Iperu, Ogun State, on Wednesday for a high-level forum hosted by Governor Dapo Abiodun. The meeting centred on regional security, intergovernmental cooperation, and shared development priorities.

Forum Reaffirms Commitment to Unity and Peace

In a statement following the summit, Governor Abiodun highlighted that the forum reaffirmed its collective commitment to Nigeria’s unity, stability, and peace. Participants reviewed the current security landscape nationwide and extended condolences to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the recent loss of military personnel in Borno State, as well as mass abductions in Kebbi, Kwara, and Niger States.

Akahi News gathered that the governors and traditional rulers also commended President Tinubu for his ongoing efforts to stabilise the economy, reduce inflation, strengthen security institutions, and deliver major infrastructure projects, including the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Road and the Sokoto–Badagry Superhighway.

Key Resolutions Adopted

The forum concluded with the adoption of several strategic resolutions aimed at enhancing security and development across the southern region:

  4. Unified Resident Identification Programme – To facilitate better citizen registration, tracking, and access to services.

  6. Land and Environmental Regulation – States urged to work with traditional rulers to regulate land allocation and curb illegal mining activities posing security and environmental risks.

Southern Nigeria Shows Unity and Confidence in Leadership

In a symbolic gesture, the governors and traditional rulers passed a vote of confidence in President Tinubu, reaffirming Southern Nigeria’s long-standing position as articulated in the 2021 Asaba Accord, which advocates for a President of Southern extraction.

Governor Abiodun emphasised that the southern region remains united across religious and cultural lines and is committed to peaceful coexistence.
