Students boo police as protest against ASUU strike intensifies in Ile-Ife

Students at Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife, Osun State, were stopped from carrying out their planned rallies against the Academic Staff Union of Universities’ ongoing strike on Thursday (ASUU).

Students who had begun congregating at the protest site were prohibited from further congregating by police agents who had arrived at the protest site.

According to information gathered by Daily Post, the demonstration has developed into a huge action on the Ife-Ibadan expressway.

According to eyewitnesses, the presence of police officers drew yells and boos from the students.

Students holding placards with anti-government chants took advantage of the opportunity to demand that the Federal Government prioritize education above elections.

Emeka Mosindi, a Geology student, criticized the government of squandering students’ time after claiming that all political figures received free education.

He revealed that as a result of the strike, many businesses that rely on the presence of students on campus to prosper are failing and would be unable to endure the effects of the long-term ASUU strike.

Another student, Akeem Olabisi, asked Nigerians to join the students’ rallies in order to push their demands, adding that the Federal Government and ASUU should reach an agreement and education should be given proper priority and financing in order to terminate the senseless industrial action.

Due to disagreements between the ASUU and Federal Government negotiation teams, the university academic group extended their strike by three months on Tuesday, May 10, 2022.
