Suspected Herders Destroy Large Portion of Cabbage Farm in Plateau
A large portion of a cabbage farm has been destroyed by persons suspected to be herders in Rakum village, Ropp District, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety of farmers, the protection of agricultural investments and the impact of insecurity on food production in the area.
According to a report by security analyst Zagazola Makama, troops of Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP) confirmed the incident after it was reported at about 9:45 a.m. on Saturday, October 10, 2026.

The troops, operating under Sector 4, reportedly proceeded to the scene to assess the situation.
Suspects Allegedly Used Cutlasses to Destroy Crops
According to the report, the troops discovered that a large portion of the cabbage farm had been cut down with cutlasses. The suspected perpetrators had reportedly fled before the troops arrived.
Efforts were said to be ongoing to track down and apprehend those responsible for the destruction.
As of the time of the report, no arrests had been announced, and the identities of the suspected perpetrators had not been established publicly.
Farmers Face Concerns Over Agricultural Losses
The destruction of crops represents a potential financial setback for the affected farmer, particularly where resources have already been invested in land preparation, seedlings, labour, fertilisers and other farming expenses.
Incidents of crop destruction can also undermine farmers’ confidence, disrupt agricultural activities and threaten the livelihoods of households that depend on farming.
However, the extent of the damage and the financial value of the affected cabbage crops had not been disclosed in the report.
Need for Investigation and Protection of Farms
The incident highlights the importance of investigating reported cases of agricultural destruction and ensuring that those found responsible are held accountable in accordance with the law.
Authorities will need to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and verify the identities and motives of the alleged perpetrators. The description of the suspects as suspected herders remains an allegation and should not be treated as proof of responsibility against any wider community.
Farmers and residents also need effective channels to report threats and damage to property so that security agencies can respond promptly.
Akahi News will continue to monitor developments and report verified updates on the investigation and any arrests connected with the incident.
