Terrorists Abduct Newly Elected Biu LG Vice Chairman, Two Councillors in Borno

Suspected Boko Haram/Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists have abducted the newly elected Vice Chairman of Biu Local Government Area of Borno State, Alhaji Saidu, alongside two councillors and several other passengers in a fresh attack in the North-East.

Akahi News gathered that the abduction occurred on Wednesday evening along the notorious Kamuya village–Buni Yadi road, a corridor long associated with insurgent attacks, ambushes, and mass kidnappings.

Details obtained by Akahi News indicate that the victims were travelling to Maiduguri after participating in the local government elections conducted last Saturday when their convoy was intercepted by the terrorists.

A counterinsurgency source told newsmen that the attackers struck while vehicles were plying the road, overpowering travellers before whisking them away into the bush.

“Yes, our newly elected Vice Chairman in the last Saturday local government polls, Alhaji Saidu, and two councillors representing Zarawuyaku and Miringa wards of Biu Local Government Area were abducted by suspected ISWAP terrorists between Kamuya village and Buni Yadi road,” a source disclosed.

According to the source, one of the councillors abducted is the immediate past Vice Chairman of Biu Local Government Area, compounding the political significance of the attack.

Other Passengers Also Seized

Akahi News learnt that the terrorists did not limit their operation to the politicians alone. Passengers from other vehicles travelling along the same route at the time of the attack were also abducted.

Sources revealed that a Hisbah vehicle travelling from Potiskum in Yobe State was intercepted by the insurgents. In addition, passengers in a Jamatul Nasrul Islam (Yan Agaji) vehicle heading to Biu were reportedly seized.

“They were abducted alongside some unidentified passengers travelling in a Jamatul Nasrul Islam vehicle en route from Potiskum town of Yobe State to Biu,” the source said.

Renewed Concerns Over Insecurity in the North-East

The latest abduction has once again raised concerns over the persistent insecurity along major highways linking Borno and Yobe states, despite repeated assurances by authorities of improved security.

The Kamuya–Buni Yadi axis has remained a flashpoint for insurgent activity over the years, with travellers frequently advised to avoid night movements due to the high risk of attacks.

As of the time of filing this report, Akahi News gathered that security agencies have commenced efforts to track the abductors and rescue the victims, though no official statement has yet been issued by the Borno State Government or security authorities.

Residents and political stakeholders have continued to call for intensified military operations and sustained security presence along the troubled corridor to prevent further attacks.
