The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has announced a major funding intervention for Nigeria’s tertiary education sector, approving a total of ₦6.452 billion for disbursement to beneficiary institutions in its 2026 intervention cycle.

According to Vanguard, the disclosure was made on Tuesday in Abuja by the Executive Secretary of TETFund, Sonny Echono, during a stakeholders’ workshop with heads of beneficiary institutions, where the guidelines for the 2026 disbursement were unveiled. Akahi News gathered that allocation letters were also formally distributed at the event.

Breakdown of Allocations to Institutions

Echono explained that under the 2026 intervention framework, all federal and state universities would each receive ₦2.525 billion, irrespective of their age, size, or student population. Polytechnics are to receive ₦1.871 billion each, while colleges of education will get ₦2.056 billion per institution.

Akahi News learnt that a total of 271 tertiary institutions are expected to benefit from the annual direct disbursement component of the intervention. The TETFund boss noted that about 90.75 per cent of the total allocation would be released as direct disbursements, comprising 50 per cent annual direct funding and 43.75 per cent special direct disbursements.

Focus on Infrastructure, Research, and Innovation

Speaking further, Echono said the funds are aimed at strengthening critical physical infrastructure, enhancing academic programmes, and boosting research and innovation across Nigeria’s tertiary education landscape.

According to him, the 2026 intervention is also designed to improve the quality and global relevance of research outputs in beneficiary institutions. He disclosed that access to international academic resources would be enhanced through the integration of the Tertiary Education, Research, Applications and Services (TERAS) platform into the Nigerian Research and Education Network (NgREN) from 2026.

“With these investments, 2026 promises to be a year of growth, innovation, and measurable impact,” Echono was quoted as saying.

Laboratories, ICT, and Agricultural Modernisation

Echono added that TETFund would continue to equip and upgrade research and development offices, laboratories, and workshops nationwide. Akahi News gathered that four major research laboratories are expected to be completed and commissioned within the year, while two additional facilities have recently commenced, with completion projected for next year.

In the agricultural sector, the TETFund boss revealed plans to transition large university farms to modern greenhouse systems and mechanised equipment, a move aimed at improving productivity and reducing labour intensity.

On ICT development, Echono said the Fund’s roadmap would be strengthened through expanded digital services, advanced research centres, improved internet access, and enhanced international education and research collaborations.

Performance-Based Future Allocations

The TETFund Executive Secretary urged heads of institutions to fully utilise their 2025 allocations, warning that future funding would be tied to performance, enrolment, and demonstrable progress.

He stressed that institutions with unutilised funds would not receive fresh allocations until existing resources are fully deployed. He also assured stakeholders that applications for fund releases would be processed promptly, while contractors would be paid within two weeks of milestone completion to avoid project delays.

Akahi News gathered that the intervention also prioritises security infrastructure, completion of abandoned projects, private-sector partnerships for student exposure programmes, and the commercialisation of research outcomes.

As Nigeria continues to grapple with challenges in its higher education sector, stakeholders believe the 2026 TETFund intervention could play a crucial role in revitalising institutions and improving global competitiveness, provided the funds are transparently and efficiently utilised.
