Tinubu Declares Nigeria Now Has Capacity to Tackle Cancer and Major Illnesses Despite Frequent Medical Trips Abroad
By Joseph Iyaji | Akahi News
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said that Nigeria’s healthcare sector has reached a point where it can handle critical illnesses such as cancer, insisting that citizens can now rely on local hospitals for advanced treatment.

Speaking on Tuesday during the inauguration of projects completed by Governor Hope Uzodimma in Owerri, the president declared:
“I have always believed in good governance. Today, Nigerians can say confidently that we have well-equipped hospitals, and we can treat critical illnesses such as cancer and other illnesses.”
Tinubu also participated in the public presentation of Uzodimma’s new book, A Decade of Impactful Progressive Governance in Nigeria, which documents the role of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in reshaping the country.
Healthcare Claims Amid Criticism
While Tinubu’s remarks were designed to boost confidence in Nigeria’s health system, they come against the backdrop of mounting criticism over his frequent medical trips to France since taking office in 2023.
Analysts told Akahi News that the president’s reliance on foreign medical care raises questions about his faith in the very facilities he now promotes as world-class. Critics argue that government officials must demonstrate leadership by patronising local hospitals to inspire citizens’ trust.
Economy: “The Worst is Over”
Turning to Nigeria’s economy, Tinubu insisted that his administration, under the APC, had rescued the nation from collapse and stabilised key financial indicators.
“I stand before you with confidence to say that Nigeria is no longer where it was 10 years ago. We promised a change. Today, I can confidently tell you the worst is over,” he told the gathering.
According to the president, Nigeria’s economy grew by 4.3 per cent in the second quarter of 2025, while inflation had dropped to 20.12 per cent.
He further stressed that state governments are now financially stronger, declaring:
“No state governor is borrowing to pay salaries.”
Uzodimma Praises Reforms
Governor Uzodimma used the occasion to commend Tinubu’s policies, especially the controversial removal of fuel subsidy, which he said had significantly boosted revenues for states.
The governor added that the financial relief allowed his administration to expand infrastructure development and complete more projects across Imo State.
Observers note that Tinubu’s statements on healthcare and economic reforms are likely aimed at reassuring Nigerians of progress under his leadership. However, the contradiction between his rhetoric and his own medical choices abroad may continue to fuel debate about the credibility of his claims.
Akahi News will continue to track reactions from political analysts, civil society, and the medical community on the president’s remarks.
