The development was announced in a statement issued on Monday, 8th September 2025, by the Director of Information and Public Relations at the State House, Abiodun Oladunjoye.

Sudden Disengagement

According to the statement, Umunubo’s disengagement takes immediate effect, and stakeholders across the digital and creative economy sectors were formally cautioned against engaging with him in the name of the current administration.

“Stakeholders and constituents of the digital and creative economy, at home and abroad, as well as the general public are hereby notified that FEGHO JOHN UMUNUBO, who hitherto had served as the Special Assistant to the President on Digital and Creative Economy (Office of the Vice President), has been disengaged with immediate effect,” the statement read in part.

No Official Reason Provided

Interestingly, the Presidency did not disclose any official reason for Umunubo’s removal, leaving many industry watchers speculating about the decision.

As at the time of this report, no reaction has been received from Umunubo himself, nor has the administration provided any further details regarding his replacement or the circumstances surrounding the disengagement.

Impact on the Digital and Creative Economy

Akahi News gathered that Umunubo was widely seen as a key player in shaping policy direction for Nigeria’s fast-growing digital and creative sectors. His sudden exit, therefore, raises questions about the future of the administration’s engagement with stakeholders in these industries.

Analysts believe that his removal could potentially affect ongoing initiatives within the creative economy unless the Presidency swiftly appoints a successor with equal or greater experience in the sector.

As the story develops, Akahi News will continue to monitor reactions from the industry and provide updates on any further announcements from the Presidency.
