Tragic Death of Zimbabwean Youth After Father’s Violent Reaction to Failed Police Recruitment Test
By Joseph Iyaji | Akahi News
A distressing incident has emerged from the Waterfalls community in Zimbabwe, where a 19-year-old man was reportedly beaten to death by his father after failing to pass the police recruitment examination. This case highlights urgent concerns about parental pressure and the consequences of extreme reactions to youth setbacks.

The victim, identified as Ngonidzashe Munyoro, returned home on August 2, 2025, following his dismissal from the Zimbabwe Republic Police recruitment training at Mkushi Academy due to failure to meet physical and academic criteria. His father, Gibson Munyoro, a security officer, allegedly reacted with violent anger upon learning of his son’s failure.
Eyewitnesses report that the father restrained his son by tying his hands and legs, suspending him between two tables using an iron bar, before repeatedly assaulting him with a baton. Neighbours recounted how Gibson warned them against intervening during the brutal beating.
Ngonidzashe’s mother, Ruvimbo Masunga, responded to neighbours’ alarms and managed to free her son from his father’s grasp, but tragically, the young man died at home from his injuries before any medical help could be rendered.
Police spokesperson Inspector Luckmore Chakanza confirmed the arrest of Gibson Munyoro, stating that murder charges are being pursued. The case is currently under thorough investigation.
This heartbreaking episode has deeply shocked the Waterfalls community and raised wider discussions on the pressures placed on youths in Zimbabwe and similar contexts, especially relating to education and career expectations. Experts warn that such parental violence is part of a worrying pattern observed in several African countries, urging for stronger support networks and mental health resources to prevent similar tragedies.
The Munyoro family’s ordeal serves as a grim reminder of the devastating impact of harsh parenting and unmet expectations, calling for a societal rethink on how to nurture resilience and compassion in young people facing setbacks.
