Troops Repel ISWAP Attack on Borno Military Base, Reinforce Fight Against Terrorists

Troops of the Nigerian military under Operation HADIN KAI have successfully repelled another attempted attack by fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) on a military base in Borno State, preventing the insurgents from overrunning the position despite an intense firefight.

Akahi News gathered that the terrorists launched a coordinated assault on a Forward Operating Base in Logomani, Ngala Local Government Area, but soldiers mounted a determined counter-offensive after the attackers briefly breached part of the base’s defensive perimeter. Military authorities said the troops regained full control of the base, inflicted casualties on the insurgents and forced the surviving fighters to retreat with gunshot wounds.

According to the military, the operation was not without sacrifice. One Nigerian soldier lost his life during the exchange of fire, while two military gun trucks and other combat equipment sustained damage. Reinforcements have since been deployed to the area as troops continue exploitation operations aimed at tracking fleeing terrorists and preventing further attacks.

Akahi News learnt that military authorities described the situation as fully under control, assuring residents that additional security measures are being implemented to strengthen the operational base against future attacks. The successful defence is part of ongoing counter-insurgency operations targeting terrorist groups operating across the North-East.

The latest confrontation comes amid renewed attempts by ISWAP fighters to attack military formations in parts of Borno State. In recent weeks, troops have repeatedly reported repelling similar assaults while recovering weapons, rescuing abducted civilians and arresting suspected terrorist collaborators during separate operations.

Security analysts note that repeated attacks on military positions indicate that ISWAP continues to test the operational readiness of security forces despite sustained military offensives. At the same time, the ability of troops to repel these assaults reflects continued operational resilience and improved response capabilities in several frontline locations.

Analysis

The latest attack demonstrates that Nigeria’s counter-insurgency campaign has entered a prolonged phase in which tactical victories do not necessarily translate into the complete elimination of terrorist threats. Although the military successfully defended the base, the incident confirms that ISWAP retains the capacity to organise coordinated attacks against strategic targets.

One significant observation is that terrorist groups increasingly focus on attacking military installations rather than civilian communities alone. Such attacks are often intended to capture weapons, destroy equipment, undermine troop morale and create propaganda that portrays the insurgents as capable of confronting government forces directly. Successfully repelling these assaults therefore carries both military and psychological importance.

The loss of a soldier during the operation also serves as a reminder of the enormous sacrifices made by members of the Armed Forces in protecting Nigeria’s territorial integrity. Public attention often centres on successful operations, but each casualty represents a family that bears the personal cost of the country’s fight against terrorism.

Another important lesson is that military operations alone may not permanently resolve the insurgency. Lasting security will also depend on effective intelligence gathering, stronger border surveillance, disruption of terrorist financing, community cooperation and sustained socio-economic development in conflict-affected areas. Terrorist organisations often attempt to exploit poverty, weak governance and local grievances to sustain recruitment.

The continued resilience of Operation HADIN KAI nevertheless sends a strong signal that Nigerian troops remain committed to denying terrorist groups freedom of movement. However, maintaining this momentum will require consistent logistical support, modern surveillance technology, improved welfare for personnel and continued collaboration among military, intelligence and civilian authorities.

Ultimately, the successful defence of the Borno military base represents an important operational achievement. Yet the broader fight against terrorism remains a long-term national challenge that demands persistence, professionalism and sustained public support for security institutions.
