Two Presidents, Dignitaries Attend Mass Wedding Of Defence Minister Matawalle’s 10 Children In Abuja

A large gathering of political leaders, traditional figures, and prominent personalities converged in Abuja as the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, celebrated the wedding of ten of his children in a single ceremony, an event that has since generated widespread attention across the country.

The wedding fatiha, which held at the National Mosque in Abuja, brought together high-ranking government officials and guests from within and outside Nigeria, highlighting the scale and significance of the occasion. The ceremony was followed by a grand reception attended by dignitaries and well-wishers.

Also present was the President of São Tomé and Príncipe, Carlos Vila Nova, whose attendance underscored the international profile of the event.

Ten Marriages Conducted In A Single Ceremony

The event stood out for its scale, as five daughters and five sons of the minister were married on the same day. The daughters — Maryam, Safiyya, Farida, Nana Firdausi, and Aisha — were given out in marriage, while the sons — Ibrahim, Abdul Jalal, Surajo, Bello, and Fahad — also tied the knot during the ceremony.

Religious prayers were offered by the officiating Imam, who prayed for peace, prosperity, and stability in the homes of the newly married couples, as well as blessings for their parents and extended families.

Observers described the ceremony as one of the largest family wedding gatherings witnessed in recent years within Nigeria’s political circle.

Public Reactions And Emerging Debate

While the ceremony attracted congratulatory messages from supporters and associates, it also sparked debate on social media platforms. Some Nigerians reportedly questioned the timing of the event, particularly in light of ongoing security concerns in parts of the country.

Akahi News learnt that reactions online reflected differing opinions, with some citizens celebrating the family milestone while others expressed concern about public officials attending social events amid national security challenges. Analysts say such reactions highlight the growing public scrutiny faced by political leaders, especially during periods of national tension.

Political commentators note that public perception increasingly plays a role in shaping political narratives, particularly when major social events coincide with pressing national issues.

Cultural Significance And Political Symbolism

Mass weddings, particularly within influential families, remain culturally significant in many northern Nigerian communities, often symbolising family unity and social prestige. However, the scale of the event and the calibre of attendees also placed it within the broader context of political symbolism, given the presence of national and international leaders.

According to observers, the gathering also served as an informal meeting point for political actors at a time when political alignments and discussions ahead of future elections continue to shape national discourse.

As conversations around the event continue, the ceremony remains a reflection of the intersection between culture, politics, and public perception in Nigeria’s evolving democratic space.
