A trailblazing graduate of the University of Lagos, Samuel Badekale, has once again demonstrated the power of academic excellence by securing the prestigious Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s Scholarship in Bio-membranes. The highly competitive European Union-funded programme will see him pursue advanced studies across three of Europe’s most distinguished universities over the next two years.

Badekale, who etched his name in the annals of UNILAG’s academic history with a perfect 5.00 Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) in Cell Biology and Genetics, was the 2023/2024 Overall Best Graduating Student and Best in Sciences. His recent feat has now placed him as the only Nigerian and West African recipient of the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s award in his category, a recognition that underscores his resilience, brilliance, and determination.
A Journey Across Three European Universities
The Erasmus Mundus programme is a unique initiative designed to expose scholars to a rich academic and cultural experience across multiple European institutions. For Badekale, the journey will span three world-class universities:
- Université Côte d’Azur in France
- University of Genoa in Italy
- University of Osnabrück in Germany
The curriculum will focus on advanced areas such as Membrane Biology, Neuroscience, and Experimental Medicine, equipping him with interdisciplinary expertise to thrive as a researcher, practitioner, or decision-maker in biomedical sciences and related fields.
From Mushin to the Global Stage
Sharing his excitement on Friday through his official handle on X (formerly Twitter), Badekale reflected on his remarkable journey from Mushin, Lagos, to the global academic stage.
“2025 has been amazing in every way! Pleased to announce the next step in my journey: selected as the only Nigerian and West African for the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s in Biomembranes, studying across three world-class universities in France, Italy, and Germany,” he wrote.
He went on to acknowledge his humble beginnings, noting that his story was a testament to faith, hard work, and the limitless possibilities of education.
“As I look back, I see a young boy from Mushin, with a big dream: to explore the world and make a positive impact. And today, by God’s faithfulness, that dream is gradually becoming a reality. Truly, with God, every dream is achievable, even those that seem impossible.”
A Call to Young Nigerians
Beyond celebrating his personal victory, Badekale used the opportunity to inspire young Nigerians to embrace education as a tool for empowerment and transformation.
“To my younger self and every student out there: Trust God. Hold your education tightly. Come out with the best grades possible, strive for excellence, because education is still one of the most powerful keys to move from your local community to the global stage. Education isn’t a scam. It’s a weapon. Use it.”
He encouraged students to see beyond immediate struggles and invest in their intellectual growth, affirming that quality education remains a gateway to global opportunities.
