Akahi News reports that UI outperformed 50 other Nigerian institutions to secure the top spot, landing within the 801–1000 global ranking band. This marks a significant improvement from its previous fourth-place finish in 2025 and signals the institution’s renewed global competitiveness.

UI last held the number-one position in 2023. This year’s performance reaffirms its status as Nigeria’s most prestigious academic institution, credited for its strong research culture, teaching quality, and international collaborations.

Covenant University Dethroned, UNILAG and BUK Shine

The 2026 ranking saw Covenant University (CU) lose its two-year reign as Nigeria’s best university, now placed fourth nationally. The University of Lagos (UNILAG) and Bayero University, Kano (BUK) ranked second and third, respectively, while CU and Landmark University tied within the 1001–1200 global band.

Among Nigerian universities, UNILAG recorded the highest research quality score of 66.7, while BUK led in international outlook. Covenant University, on the other hand, earned recognition for achieving the top industry score, reflecting robust partnerships with the private sector.

Nigeria’s Overall Global Standing

The 2026 edition of the THE ranking evaluated 2,191 universities from 115 countries, using 18 indicators across five pillars — teaching, research environment, research quality, industry, and international outlook.

Out of the 51 Nigerian universities featured:

  • UI and UNILAG placed between 801–1000 globally
  • BUK, Covenant, and Landmark University ranked 1001–1200
  • Universities such as Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUTMinna), University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), University of Jos (UNIJOS), and University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) were within 1201–1500
  • Other universities, including Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) and University of Benin (UNIBEN), appeared in the 1501+ band

A Reflection of Rising Research Output

The new data draws from over 18.7 million research publications and 174.9 million citations, alongside survey responses from more than 108,000 scholars worldwide. For eligibility, universities were required to have published at least 1,000 research papers between 2020 and 2024.

Education analysts believe UI’s resurgence signifies a positive shift in Nigeria’s higher education sector, especially amid calls for improved funding and research support.

Akahi News gathered that the ranking not only spotlights Nigeria’s growing academic visibility but also reaffirms the need for government and private stakeholders to sustain this progress through strategic investment in research and innovation.
