US Immigration Detains Ghana’s Former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta Amid Corruption Case

United States immigration authorities have detained Ghana’s former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, a development that has sparked renewed debate over his ongoing corruption case back home and raised questions about international cooperation in high-profile financial crime investigations.

Akahi News gathered that Ofori-Atta was taken into custody by officials of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) over issues linked to the status of his stay in the United States.

According to AmiLoaded News, the former finance minister, aged 66, has been in the United States since January 2025 to receive medical care, including prostate cancer surgery. His legal representatives disclosed that ICE officials detained him earlier this week following concerns surrounding his immigration documentation and stay extension request.

In a statement released by his lawyers, it was explained that Ofori-Atta had formally applied to extend his stay in the US but was nonetheless taken into custody pending clarification of his immigration status.

“His US legal team is in contact with ICE and expects the matter to be resolved expeditiously,” the lawyers said, adding that he is fully cooperating with American immigration authorities.

Declared Fugitive Over Corruption Allegations

Akahi News learnt that Ofori-Atta was declared a fugitive by Ghanaian authorities in February 2025 after he failed to respond to summons relating to alleged corruption cases. He was subsequently charged in November over accusations linked to his tenure in office.

ICE’s online detention records reportedly list the former minister as being held at a facility in the US state of Virginia, although no timeline has been provided regarding possible deportation or release.

Controversial Tenure as Finance Minister

Ofori-Atta served as Ghana’s finance minister from 2017 to 2024 under former President Nana Akufo-Addo. During this period, he oversaw several controversial economic reforms, including new tax measures and negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) amid Ghana’s deepening fiscal challenges.

While supporters credit him with navigating difficult economic terrain, critics argue that his policies worsened public hardship and lacked transparency—concerns that later fuelled investigations into his conduct while in office.

Broader Implications

Akahi News gathered that the detention has reignited conversations in Ghana about accountability, political power, and the ability of former public officials to evade justice by travelling abroad. Analysts believe the outcome of the US immigration process could influence Ghana’s efforts to pursue the corruption charges against him.

For now, Ofori-Atta remains in US custody as legal and diplomatic processes unfold, with both Ghanaian authorities and international observers closely watching developments.
