Power Outage Forces Health Workers to Use Phone Lights

A disturbing video circulating on social media has drawn attention to the challenges facing healthcare facilities in parts of Nigeria after showing medical workers treating a patient in near darkness at a hospital in Suleja, Niger State.

A medical professional in a maroon outfit stands beside a hospital bed, attending to a patient in a dimly lit room. Another individual in a white coat watches from a distance. The bed is equipped with an IV stand and a yellow blanket.

In the footage, nurses and other medical personnel are seen attending to a patient lying on a hospital bed while using phone flashlights and torchlights to illuminate the ward.

Akahi News gathered that the video was reportedly recorded during a power outage, leaving the medical staff with minimal lighting while attempting to carry out their duties.

The shaky recording shows the treatment area dimly lit, with health workers struggling to maintain visibility as they move around the patient.

Voices Heard in Background as Staff Continue Work

Voices speaking in Hausa can be heard in the background of the video, although it is not clearly understood what the speakers are saying.

Despite the difficult conditions, the medical staff appear focused on attending to the patient while improvising with available light sources.

The identity of the hospital ward and the condition of the patient involved in the incident have not been officially confirmed.

However, the footage is believed to have been recorded at a medical facility located in Suleja, a town in Niger State close to Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory.

Nigerians React to Conditions in Public Hospitals

The video has triggered widespread reactions online, with many Nigerians expressing concern about the state of infrastructure in some public healthcare institutions.

Several commentators said the footage highlights the challenges faced by medical workers who often operate under difficult conditions while trying to deliver care.

Others argued that persistent electricity shortages in healthcare facilities could pose risks to both patients and medical personnel.

Akahi News learnt that electricity supply remains one of the major operational challenges confronting many hospitals across Nigeria, particularly in facilities that rely heavily on unstable public power supply.

Calls for Improved Healthcare Infrastructure

Public health observers say reliable electricity is essential for modern medical care, as many critical procedures depend on stable lighting and power for equipment.

Hospitals typically rely on backup generators during outages, but such systems may fail or become difficult to maintain due to rising fuel costs and infrastructure challenges.

Analysts warn that improving power supply and infrastructure in healthcare facilities remains crucial to strengthening Nigeria’s medical system and ensuring safer treatment environments for patients.

The emergence of the video has renewed calls from members of the public for increased investment in healthcare infrastructure and improved working conditions for medical professionals.
