The reported death of a vigilante member identified as Sunday, popularly known as Apetu, shortly after a sexual encounter in Ile-Ife, Osun State, has generated considerable public attention and speculation.

According to the report, the incident occurred at about 2:30pm in the Odi-Olokun area of Ile-Ife. The man reportedly became severely distressed shortly after the encounter and died soon afterwards.

The Osun State Police Command has arrested the woman who was reportedly with him and commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

However, one fact must remain central to any responsible discussion of the incident: the cause of Apetu’s death has not yet been officially established.

What We Know So Far

According to the information available, Apetu reportedly experienced severe physical distress following the sexual encounter.

A video circulating on social media allegedly showed him at Ooni Ilare Street, apparently in distress and pleading with the woman to give him urine.

A situation report attributed to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) reportedly stated that he was gasping, screaming and exhibiting signs of severe physical distress before eventually dying.

His remains were subsequently deposited at the morgue of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex (OAUTHC), Ile-Ife.

The woman involved was taken into custody at the Moore Police Division as the police began investigating.

These are the circumstances that require investigation—not assumptions about what caused the death.

The Most Important Question: What Actually Killed Him?

The timing of the death naturally raises questions.

But dying shortly after a sexual encounter does not automatically mean that the sexual encounter caused the death.

There could be several possible explanations, including an underlying medical emergency, a cardiovascular event, a neurological problem, intoxication, an adverse reaction to a substance, or another medical condition.

There could also be circumstances that investigators may need to examine for possible criminal involvement.

At present, however, none of these possibilities should be presented as an established fact.

That is why medical examination and, if necessary, an autopsy are particularly important.

What About the “Thunderbolt” Claim?

Perhaps the most controversial aspect of the incident is the claim reportedly being made by some residents that Apetu died from what they described as a “thunderbolt” following sexual contact.

This belief exists within some traditional and cultural narratives surrounding sexual relationships and alleged supernatural consequences.

But from the standpoint of establishing the cause of death, a traditional belief cannot substitute for medical and forensic evidence.

There is currently no official confirmation that a supernatural phenomenon caused Apetu’s death.

This is where responsible journalism and public discussion become extremely important.

People are free to hold cultural or religious beliefs, but when investigating a sudden death, authorities need evidence capable of establishing the actual cause.

The Woman’s Arrest Does Not Establish Her Guilt

Another issue requiring careful attention is the arrest of the woman.

Because she was reportedly the person with Apetu shortly before his death, investigators are understandably interested in obtaining her account of what happened.

But being arrested or taken into custody is not proof that she caused the death.

The police themselves have not publicly established that she killed him, nor has the report indicated that a criminal charge has been established against her.

The investigation should therefore be allowed to proceed without turning the woman into a convicted person in the court of public opinion.

This is particularly important in the age of social media, where an allegation can spread to thousands of people within minutes and permanently damage someone’s reputation—even when the allegation eventually proves false.

The Video Raises Questions, But It Does Not Provide All the Answers

The reported video of Apetu in distress may be relevant evidence, but it should not be interpreted beyond what it actually shows.

A video can potentially help investigators establish:

  • the man’s physical condition before his death;
  • his movements and location;
  • the approximate timeline;
  • who was present;
  • what he said or requested;
  • and what happened immediately before emergency assistance was sought.

However, a video showing someone in distress does not by itself establish the medical cause of that distress.

That requires proper medical investigation.

What the Police Investigation Should Establish

A thorough investigation should attempt to reconstruct the events from the sexual encounter to the man’s death.

Among the questions investigators should consider are:

1. What happened immediately after the encounter?

Who first noticed that Apetu was in distress?

2. What exactly was his physical condition?

Was he experiencing difficulty breathing, convulsions, chest pain, loss of consciousness or another identifiable symptom?

3. Were any substances involved?

Investigators may need to determine whether alcohol, drugs, medication or any other substance played a role.

4. Did he have an underlying medical condition?

A previously unknown medical condition could potentially cause sudden death, even in apparently healthy people.

5. Was there any physical injury?

Medical examination should establish whether there were injuries suggesting an assault or whether there was no such evidence.

6. What does the medical examination or autopsy reveal?

This could ultimately be the most decisive question.

The Police Must Avoid Two Extremes

There are two dangers in an incident like this.

The first is prematurely declaring the woman responsible simply because she was present when the man died.

The second is prematurely accepting the supernatural explanation simply because the circumstances appear unusual.

Both approaches can interfere with the search for the truth.

The appropriate approach is evidence.

If medical evidence establishes a natural cause of death, the public deserves to know.

If investigators discover evidence of poisoning, assault or another criminal act, the appropriate legal process should follow.

If the evidence establishes something else, that should also be communicated clearly.

There Is Also a Human Dimension

Behind the sensational circumstances is a man who has reportedly lost his life and a family that now needs answers.

His death should not become merely another viral story for social media users to joke about, sensationalise or exploit.

At the same time, the woman involved deserves due process.

The responsible position is therefore to protect both the dignity of the deceased and the rights of the person under investigation.

Akahi News Analysis

The Apetu case is precisely the type of incident where society must resist the temptation to reach conclusions before the evidence is available.

The circumstances are certainly unusual: a man reportedly experienced severe distress shortly after a sexual encounter, was captured on video apparently pleading for urine, and subsequently died.

Those facts justify an investigation.

But they do not yet establish why he died.

The reported “thunderbolt” explanation should remain what it currently is—a claim attributed to some residents, not an established cause of death.

Likewise, the woman’s arrest should be understood as part of an investigation, not as proof that she caused the death.

The most credible answer will ultimately have to come from proper police investigation, witness accounts, available video evidence, medical examination and, where necessary, forensic autopsy.

Akahi News therefore believes that the public should allow the relevant authorities to establish the facts before attaching criminal or supernatural explanations to the death.

The question is not what people believe happened. The question is what the evidence proves happened.

Akahi News learnt that the police have commenced an investigation and have urged members of the public to refrain from spreading unverified claims while the circumstances surrounding the death are being established.
