Youths Protest Escalating Insecurity in Lafiagi, Set NDLEA Office Ablaze, Vandalise Emir’s Palace

LAFIAGI, KWARA STATE – June 30, 2025
Tensions boiled over in Lafiagi, Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State, on Monday, as scores of youths took to the streets in a massive protest against the growing wave of insecurity threatening lives and livelihoods in the region.

Angered by recurring incidents of kidnapping, killings, and terrorist attacks, the demonstrators chanted protest songs and wielded placards with bold inscriptions demanding urgent government intervention. The atmosphere was charged as the youths accused local and state authorities of negligence and failure to protect citizens.

The protest quickly spiraled into violence. Protesters set fire to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) office in Lafiagi and vandalised the Emir’s palace, smashing windows and damaging parts of the historic building. Eyewitnesses described the scenes as chaotic, with crowds marching toward government buildings in a show of frustration and desperation.

“We have been crying and dying in silence,” a protester shouted in a viral video clip. “People are being kidnapped every week. We no longer sleep with both eyes closed, and nobody—neither the governor, nor the chairman, not even the Emir—is doing anything about it.”

Residents of Lafiagi and neighbouring communities have suffered a surge in criminal activities in recent weeks, including the abduction of several individuals. Many victims remain in captivity, with families reportedly forced to pay huge sums as ransom.

According to local sources, Monday’s protest was the culmination of long-standing grievances over the government’s perceived inaction and the deteriorating security landscape. “The frequency of attacks has increased,” one source said. “The youths are exhausted and no longer willing to remain silent.”

Calls have intensified for both Kwara State and federal authorities to step in decisively. Community leaders, security experts, and civil society organisations are urging the deployment of additional security forces and comprehensive efforts to restore peace and rebuild trust in affected areas.
