Zulum Visits Niger Republic to Strengthen Military Cooperation Amid Public Speculation

By Joseph Iyaji | Akahi News

Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, has embarked on a visit to Diffa in the Niger Republic aimed at bolstering military and economic cooperation across the Lake Chad Basin. The trip comes in the wake of recent military gains against Boko Haram and ISWAP insurgents in border communities where thousands of Nigerian refugees remain in camps.

Borno State Governor Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum engaged in a meeting with military officials in Diffa, Niger Republic, discussing security cooperation.

Governor Zulum, who led a high-powered delegation including Speaker of the Borno State House of Assembly, Abdulkarim Lawan, and House of Representatives member, Engineer Bukar Talba, was received by the Governor of Diffa Region, Brigadier General Mahamadou Ibrahim Bagadoma, alongside senior Nigerien officials.

During a closed-door meeting, both leaders discussed plans for joint patrols, intelligence sharing, and efforts to consolidate fragile peace in liberated areas. Zulum stated that his administration is working to leverage the improved security atmosphere to return displaced farmers to fertile farmlands around Dutchi in the Lake Chad Basin.

“Restoring farming activities remains key to the region’s recovery and food security,” the governor emphasised.

Public Speculation Over Timing of Visit

While the official statement highlights security and economic cooperation, the timing of Zulum’s visit has sparked widespread speculation on social media. This follows recent reports by Sahel states threatening to release names of alleged Nigerian politicians sponsoring terrorism in the region.

On platforms like Nairaland, several users linked the governor’s sudden visit to the threat of exposing terrorism sponsors, with some questioning whether the trip was a diplomatic mission or a lobby to prevent potential disclosures.

Despite the speculation, the Borno State Government has maintained that the visit is part of its long-standing efforts to strengthen cross-border cooperation to defeat insurgency and resettle displaced communities.
