The Osun State Police Command has commenced the prosecution of 13 suspects arrested for various alleged offences, including kidnapping, cultism, ritual-related crimes, stealing, hooliganism and unlawful possession of substances suspected to be Indian hemp. Akahi News gathered that the suspects were arrested during separate intelligence-led operations across different parts of Osun State and have now been charged before the appropriate courts.

The Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, disclosed the development during a press briefing in Osogbo, where he also announced the successful rescue of an abducted herder and the recovery of ₦2.2 million allegedly paid as ransom. According to the police, the arrests form part of ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks and improve public safety across the state. The suspects remain presumed innocent until proven guilty by a competent court.
Critical Analysis
i. Arrests Alone Do Not End Crime
Akahi News believes that while the arrest of multiple suspects is encouraging, the true measure of success lies in successful prosecution.
Many criminal cases attract public attention at the point of arrest but later fail because of insufficient evidence, poor investigation or delays in the judicial process. Effective prosecution is essential if arrests are to serve as a genuine deterrent to crime.
ii. Intelligence-Led Policing Is Producing Results
The operation demonstrates the growing value of intelligence gathering in modern policing.
Rather than relying solely on routine patrols, security agencies are increasingly using intelligence to identify suspected criminals, rescue victims and recover ransom payments. Sustaining this approach could strengthen security not only in Osun State but across Nigeria.
iii. Organised Crime Requires a Coordinated Response
The suspects are facing allegations involving different forms of criminality, including kidnapping, cultism and ritual-related offences.
Akahi News believes this highlights the need for continued collaboration between the police, intelligence agencies, local communities and the judiciary. Tackling organised crime requires more than isolated arrests; it demands coordinated action that disrupts criminal networks and prevents their re-emergence.
iv. Citizens Must Continue Supporting Security Agencies
Security agencies cannot be everywhere at once.
Prompt reporting of suspicious movements, unusual gatherings and criminal activities by members of the public can significantly improve the effectiveness of law enforcement operations and help prevent crimes before they occur.
v. Justice Must Remain Fair and Transparent
Although the allegations against the suspects are serious, the legal process must be respected.
Every accused person is entitled to a fair hearing, while prosecutors bear the responsibility of presenting credible evidence before the court. A justice system that is both firm and fair strengthens public confidence and protects the rule of law.
What This Means for Nigerians
The prosecution of the suspects sends a message that law enforcement agencies are continuing efforts to confront violent crime in Osun State.
However, reducing kidnapping and related offences will also require sustained intelligence gathering, efficient judicial processes, community cooperation and greater public awareness.
Akahi News commends the security agencies for their continued efforts to combat criminal activities across Osun State.

As the cases proceed through the courts, Nigerians should allow the judicial process to run its course while supporting lawful efforts to improve public safety. Lasting security will depend not only on arrests but also on successful prosecution, respect for due process and strong collaboration between security agencies and the communities they serve.
