Nigerian activist Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), had a dramatic encounter with suspected kidnappers in Edo State while travelling with his team, an incident that has sparked intense debate on social media.

A viral video circulating online captured the tense moment when VDM and his crew ran into armed kidnappers who had reportedly blocked a section of the road. According to reports gathered by Akahi News, the activist and his team quickly joined forces with the police to confront the assailants, during which a kidnapped victim—who had already sustained gunshot injuries—was rescued. In the exchange of gunfire, one of the suspected kidnappers was allegedly killed.
Public Reactions
The incident has stirred widespread reactions among Nigerians on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
A user, Flawless, wrote: “Nigeria is becoming too unsafe. VeryDarkMan and his team just encountered suspected kidnappers in Edo, gunfire, chaos, and one life nearly lost. This comes after cases like Fish Magnet, abducted and killed.”
Another user, Buharilife01, commented: “See as VeryDarkMan dey para, omor just pray even at your last minute make God send helper. The most important thing be say VeryDarkMan turn go carry the driver, omor.”
Also, Startizzy noted: “Once you set your camera and video, you are a content creator. It depends on the content you create. VeryDarkMan is both an activist and a content creator.”
Growing Concerns Over Insecurity
The episode has once again underscored Nigeria’s rising security challenges, particularly the increasing threat of kidnappings on highways. Many citizens expressed gratitude for the intervention but also voiced concern that such violent encounters are becoming far too common.
As security agencies continue efforts to combat kidnapping across the country, the incident involving VDM has reignited calls for stronger government action to protect travellers and restore public confidence in the safety of Nigeria’s roads.
