ADC Fires Back at APC Over Defection Claims, Says ‘Even All Nigeria’s Governors Can’t Save a Hated Party’
By Joseph Iyaji | Akahi News

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has sharply criticised the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) over claims that “key ADC figures” are set to defect to the APC, describing the ruling party as “the most hated political organisation in Nigeria” whose alleged desperation for survival has reached new heights.

In a statement obtained by Akahi News, the ADC reacted to remarks made by the APC National Chairman, Dr. Nentawe Yilwatda, at a stakeholders’ meeting in Jos, where he announced that some prominent ADC members would be received into the APC next week.

ADC: “No Amount of Defections Can Save APC”

According to the ADC, the declaration by the APC chairman only reinforces the ruling party’s “deep realisation that it cannot be saved even if all the governors in Nigeria defected to its fold.”

The opposition party, in its strongly worded statement shared with Akahi News, said:

“This statement underscores a deep realisation by the ruling party that it cannot be saved even if all the governors in Nigeria defected to the APC. This is why, even with all the governors and senators they have been bragging about, the APC is still desperate for ADC members.”

The ADC went on to accuse the APC of failing Nigerians since it assumed power, arguing that its policies have led to mass poverty and disillusionment.

“The truth remains that the APC realises it has become the most hated party in Nigeria, and no amount of defections can save it from Nigerians whose lives and livelihoods the ruling party has destroyed since it came to power,” the statement added.

“A Gang-Up Against the People”

As reported by Akahi News, the ADC described the wave of defections across political parties as a “gang-up against the people” orchestrated by a self-serving political elite disconnected from ordinary Nigerians.

“The recent gale of high-profile defections to the ruling party is properly understood by ordinary Nigerians as a gang-up against the people by a ruling elite who have left the people behind in abject poverty and are only interested in self-preservation even as their people wallow in misery.”

The ADC mocked the APC’s strategy, suggesting that the ruling party has “run out of governors to seduce” and is now resorting to unverified claims about opposition defections.

“We wonder if the APC has run out of governors to seduce that it has now turned to shadowy references to unnamed ADC members? If these individuals are so ‘key’, let the chairman of the hated party mention their names.”

“History Will Repeat Itself”

In its closing remarks, the ADC likened the APC’s political tactics to those used by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) during its years of dominance, warning that such arrogance and manipulation will eventually lead to the same downfall.

“There is nothing new in the game that the APC is playing. It is the same ruinous game that the PDP played at the height of its powers. The APC will also learn the bitter lesson that real democratic power lies with the people and not a few power merchants.”

Political analysts who spoke with Akahi News observed that the ADC’s statement signals a growing frustration among opposition parties over what they perceive as the ruling party’s aggressive recruitment tactics ahead of the 2027 elections.

For now, Nigerians will be watching to see whether any prominent ADC figures indeed cross over to the APC — or whether the ruling party’s claims are simply another political PR move amid growing public discontent.
