In announcing his death, Aiyedatiwa described the late Afenifere leader as a patriarch whose life was defined by wisdom, integrity and selfless service.

The governor also commiserated with the Fasoranti family, the people of Akure Kingdom and the wider Ondo State community, praying for the peaceful repose of his soul.

Fasoranti’s Early Life and Educational Background

Born on May 11, 1926, Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti built a career that combined education, public service and political engagement.

Before becoming a prominent figure in Nigeria’s political landscape, he worked as a teacher and school administrator. His professional background in education shaped his interest in human development and the importance of preparing younger generations for leadership.

He attended Ondo Boys’ High School and later pursued further studies, including at the University College, Ibadan, now the University of Ibadan. His academic and professional development helped prepare him for responsibilities in education and public administration.

Fasoranti subsequently contributed to educational development through school administration and the establishment of institutions, including Omolere Nursery and Primary School and Akure High School.

His work in education remained an important part of his legacy, reflecting his belief in the role of learning in personal advancement and societal development.

His Role in Ondo State Politics

Fasoranti was closely associated with the progressive political tradition championed by the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

His political journey included involvement with the Action Group and later the Unity Party of Nigeria, organisations associated with the progressive movement in southwestern Nigeria.

During the Second Republic, he served as Commissioner for Finance in the old Ondo State between 1979 and 1983 under the administration of Governor Michael Adekunle Ajasin.

The appointment placed him among the political figures involved in the administration of the state during a significant period in Nigeria’s democratic history.

His experience in government, combined with his background in education and political activism, strengthened his standing among progressive politicians and Yoruba political leaders.

Over the years, Fasoranti became known as a disciplined political figure whose public interventions frequently centred on governance, justice, federalism and the interests of the Yoruba people.

Emergence as Afenifere Leader

Fasoranti rose to become the leader of Afenifere following the death of Pa Abraham Adesanya, his predecessor.

Afenifere is a prominent Yoruba socio-political organisation with roots in the progressive political tradition associated with Awolowo. It has participated in national debates on constitutional reform, restructuring, democratic governance and the place of regional interests within Nigeria’s federal system.

Under Fasoranti’s leadership, the organisation continued to contribute to political discussions affecting southwestern Nigeria and the country as a whole.

His position gave him a platform to express views on national leadership, constitutional arrangements, security and the need for a political system that adequately addresses the concerns of Nigeria’s diverse communities.

As an elder statesman, his influence extended beyond party politics. His interventions were often considered within broader discussions about Yoruba identity, political representation and Nigeria’s future.

Fasoranti and Nigeria’s Struggle for Democracy

One of the defining aspects of Fasoranti’s public life was his association with pro-democracy activism during periods of military rule.

He was among the prominent figures linked to the National Democratic Coalition, popularly known as NADECO, which opposed military dictatorship and advocated a return to democratic government.

The struggle for democracy was a defining chapter in Nigeria’s political history, particularly during the military regime of General Sani Abacha.

Fasoranti’s association with the pro-democracy movement contributed to his reputation as a political figure who remained involved in debates about constitutional government and citizens’ rights.

His long public life spanned the colonial era, Nigeria’s independence, the First Republic, successive military administrations and the country’s return to civilian rule in 1999.

Few political careers encompass such a broad period of national transformation. His experience offered a connection between earlier generations of political activists and contemporary debates about governance.

Personal Tragedy and the National Security Debate

Despite his public achievements, Fasoranti experienced a devastating personal tragedy in July 2019 when his daughter, Funke Olakunrin, was killed in an attack along the Ondo-Ore Expressway.

Her death attracted widespread attention and renewed public concern about insecurity on Nigerian highways.

The incident became part of a broader national conversation about the protection of travellers, the effectiveness of security operations and the responsibility of government to safeguard lives.

For Fasoranti and his family, the loss was deeply personal. For many Nigerians, it also highlighted the human consequences of insecurity and the urgent need for effective responses to violent crime.

The tragedy remained an important chapter in the elder statesman’s life, even as he continued to occupy a respected position in Yoruba political affairs.

Aiyedatiwa Mourns the Elder Statesman

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa expressed grief over Fasoranti’s death, highlighting the late leader’s contributions to Ondo State, Yorubaland and Nigeria.

The governor described him as a beacon of wisdom, integrity and selfless service whose guidance and principled positions on justice and good governance would be greatly missed.

Aiyedatiwa also extended condolences to the bereaved family, the people of Akure Kingdom and residents of Ondo State.

The announcement has placed the passing of the centenarian among the significant developments in Nigeria’s political landscape on Tuesday.

Fasoranti’s death also comes at a time when questions concerning political leadership, national unity, constitutional reform and the future of Nigeria’s democratic institutions remain prominent in public discourse.

What Fasoranti’s Death Means for Afenifere

The death of a long-serving leader inevitably raises questions about continuity, succession and the future direction of an organisation.

For Afenifere, Fasoranti’s passing marks the loss of a figure who represented a longstanding connection to the progressive political tradition of southwestern Nigeria.

The organisation’s future will depend on its ability to preserve its established principles while responding to the political realities facing a new generation of Nigerians.

Its positions on restructuring, federalism, good governance and the protection of regional interests will continue to be relevant to national debates. However, sustaining its influence will require effective leadership, internal cohesion and the ability to engage constructively with changing political circumstances.

The transition also presents an opportunity for younger leaders to contribute to the organisation’s development while learning from the experiences of those who helped shape its history.

The responsibility of preserving a political legacy cannot rest on remembrance alone. It requires continued engagement with the issues and principles that gave the organisation its relevance.

A Century of Service and Political Influence

Pa Reuben Fasoranti lived through a century of profound change in Nigeria, witnessing the country’s evolution from colonial rule to independence, military government and democratic restoration.

His life combined several roles: educator, school administrator, public official, political activist and Yoruba elder statesman.

His contributions to education, his service in the old Ondo State government and his leadership of Afenifere established his place in the political history of southwestern Nigeria.

His legacy will also be assessed through the causes he championed, the institutions he helped sustain and the influence he exercised in conversations about governance and national development.

For his family, the immediate concern is the loss of a father, grandfather and patriarch. For Afenifere, it is the departure of a longstanding leader. For Ondo State and Yorubaland, it is the loss of a prominent voice whose experience stretched across generations.

The death of Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti at 100 marks the end of a remarkable chapter in Yoruba and Nigerian political history.

His career reflected a lifetime of involvement in education, public administration, democratic activism and the leadership of Afenifere.

As tributes emerge, the lasting significance of his life will depend not only on the honours paid to him but also on how future leaders uphold the principles of integrity, public service, justice and responsible governance associated with his public legacy.

His passing leaves Afenifere and the wider political community with the challenge of preserving institutional continuity while adapting to the demands of a changing Nigeria.

May his soul rest in peace.
