Ash Wednesday 2026: Cleric Urges Faithful to Embrace Repentance, Prayer and Charity as Lenten Journey Begins

The Parish Priest of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Pro-Cathedral Church, Lagere, Ile-Ife, Rev. Fr Peter Adeyemi, has called on Christians to approach the Lenten season with sincerity of heart, describing Ash Wednesday as a solemn reminder of human mortality and a renewed invitation to repentance and spiritual renewal.

Rev. Fr Peter Adeyemi

Delivering his 2026 Ash Wednesday homily, the cleric explained that the season marks the beginning of a forty-day spiritual journey leading to Easter, a period set aside by the Church for reflection, sacrifice, and a deeper relationship with God. He stressed that Lent should not be reduced to mere abstinence from food, but should also involve conscious withdrawal from sin and habits that weaken one’s faith and moral life.

Akahi News gathered that the homily focused on the need for inward transformation, urging worshippers to see the season as an opportunity to reassess their lives and return fully to God.

Ash Wednesday as a Call to Reflection and Repentance

According to the priest, the ashes placed on the foreheads of the faithful serve as a visible reminder that human life is temporary and that every believer must remain mindful of eternity. He noted that the Church, through this sacred tradition, calls Christians to humility and sincere repentance.

Drawing from the message of the prophet Joel, he explained that the call to repentance is universal, emphasising that everyone is invited to turn back to God regardless of past shortcomings. He also referenced the teaching in the First Letter of John, reminding believers that acknowledging one’s sins is necessary for reconciliation and spiritual growth.

Akahi News learnt that the cleric encouraged parishioners to avoid outward displays of religiosity, stressing instead the importance of genuine conversion that begins in the heart.

The Three Pillars of the Lenten Season

Rev. Fr Adeyemi outlined the three cardinal pillars of Lent — repentance, prayer, and charity — describing them as essential practices that guide Christians throughout the season.

He explained that repentance requires honest self-examination and a willingness to change, while prayer strengthens one’s communion with God and provides spiritual direction. Charity, he added, expresses love for neighbour and reflects the true meaning of Christian sacrifice.

The priest further reminded the faithful of Christ’s teaching to “anoint your head” and give in secret, urging believers to practise their faith quietly and sincerely rather than seeking public recognition.

Call to Support the Poor During Lent

In a practical directive to parishioners, the cleric conveyed the recommendation of the Bishop of Osogbo Catholic Diocese, Most Rev. John Oyejola, encouraging the faithful to set aside the monetary equivalent of at least one daily meal for the poor throughout the Lenten period.

He explained that such acts of charity allow personal sacrifice to become a source of hope for those in need, especially in challenging economic times. According to him, Lent offers an opportunity for Christians to move beyond personal devotion and embrace social responsibility through acts of generosity and compassion.

Akahi News gathered that parishioners were encouraged to see charity not as an obligation but as an expression of love and solidarity with the less privileged.

A Time to Retrace, Rediscover and Renew Communion with God

The homily concluded with a call for Christians to use the Lenten season as a time to retrace their steps, rediscover their faith, and restore their relationship with God. The priest urged believers to approach the forty-day journey with discipline, prayerfulness, and openness to spiritual renewal.

Observers noted that the message resonated deeply with worshippers, particularly as many seek spiritual direction and hope amid present social and economic challenges. The emphasis on repentance, prayer, and charity was presented as a pathway not only to personal transformation but also to stronger communal faith.

As the Lenten season begins, the Church continues to remind the faithful that Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of a spiritual journey — a call to return to God with all one’s heart and to prepare worthily for the celebration of Easter.
