ASUP Gives FG 21-Day Ultimatum Over Unaddressed Demands
By Susan Taiwo|Akahi news
The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has issued a 21-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to address several outstanding issues affecting the polytechnic education sector. The union warned that failure to comply may lead to industrial action, potentially disrupting academic activities nationwide.

Establishment of National Polytechnics Commission
ASUP’s key demands include the establishment of a dedicated regulatory body, the National Polytechnics Commission, similar to those governing universities and colleges of education. The union expressed disappointment over delays in the legislative process required to actualize the commission.
Concerns Over Accreditation and Treatment of HND Holders
The union criticized the continued use of external consultants for accreditation exercises in polytechnics, citing concerns about the competence and background of some contractors. ASUP also reiterated its long-standing concern over the disparity in the treatment of Higher National Diploma (HND) holders compared to university degree holders, stating that this persistent discrimination undermines the morale of polytechnic graduates and hampers the sector’s development.
Economic Hardship and Unfulfilled Commitments
ASUP lamented the economic hardship facing polytechnic lecturers and criticized the government’s delay in fulfilling commitments under the 2010 ASUP-FGN agreement, including the payment of the Peculiar Academic Allowance and the full implementation of the 25-35% salary review.
Potential Industrial Action
The union’s National Executive Council resolved to issue the ultimatum, warning that ASUP may be compelled to declare a trade dispute and withdraw services across public polytechnics and monotechnics nationwide if the issues remain unresolved.
FG Urged to Take Immediate Action
The Federal Government is urged to take immediate action to address the union’s demands and avert a potential crisis in the polytechnic education sector.
