The Sokoto State Government has revealed that it has allocated N4.7 billion towards registering students for external examinations. This disclosure was made by the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Prof. Ahmed Ala, in a recent interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

According to Prof. Ala, the external examinations include those administered by prominent bodies such as the West African Examinations Council, National Examinations Council, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, and National Board for Technical Education. The Commissioner emphasized that this initiative aims to ensure all eligible students participate in these examinations, regardless of their financial background.

In addition to registration fees, the state government also provides financial support to secondary school principals. Each principal receives a monthly imprest of N200,000, amounting to approximately N66 million annually, to cater for immediate school needs, including minor repairs.

Prof. Ala highlighted the government’s efforts to motivate teachers, citing a significant salary increase from N20,000 to a minimum of N70,000, aligning with the national minimum wage. He noted a marked improvement in salary payment timelines, with teachers now receiving their salaries by the 19th or 20th of each month.

The state government remains committed to enhancing enrolment and retention in basic education. To achieve this, the ministry is engaging in sensitization campaigns to encourage parents and guardians to enroll their children in school and ensure they complete their programs.
