By Joseph Iyaji | Akahi News

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has firmly dismissed widespread speculations suggesting that he is prepared to step aside for another presidential aspirant in the 2027 elections.

The controversy followed Atiku’s recent interview with the BBC Hausa Service, where he reportedly hinted that he might withdraw from the race if a younger and vibrant aspirant secured the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ticket. The interpretation, however, quickly spiralled into claims that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain was abandoning his presidential bid.

Atiku’s media aide, Paul Ibe, issued a statement on Thursday to set the record straight. He explained that both the original Hausa interview and its English translation revealed no point where the former Vice President categorically said he would step down for any candidate.

Atiku’s Position on Young Aspirants

According to Ibe, Atiku’s comments were largely misinterpreted. What the PDP stalwart actually conveyed was his openness to supporting young Nigerians who demonstrate capacity and emerge through a competitive democratic process.

“He never said he intends to quit the race,” the statement stressed. “Rather, he encouraged young aspirants to contest, adding that he would support such a candidate if they won fairly at the primaries.”

This position reflects Atiku’s long-standing advocacy for youth participation in governance — a recurring theme throughout his political career.

Media Interpretation and Political Implications

Observers note that the episode underscores the dangers of what Atiku’s camp described as “interpretative mischief” in political reporting. The statement from his media office cautioned against stretching meanings beyond their original context.

Political analysts told Akahi News that the clarification was necessary to douse rising speculations within opposition circles. Some had already begun linking Atiku’s supposed withdrawal to internal party realignments ahead of 2027.

With this clarification, Atiku has reasserted his presidential ambition while also keeping the door open for younger contenders. The development signals that the build-up to the 2027 elections will be closely watched, particularly within the PDP, where internal contests and coalition-building are expected to play a decisive role.
