Atiku Signals Openness to Generational Shift

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has declared his readiness to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race if a younger and widely acceptable candidate emerges within the opposition coalition.

Speaking in an interview with BBC Hausa Service on Wednesday, Atiku, who is currently a leading figure in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), said his ambition was not driven by personal interest but by a desire to “rescue Nigerians from those holding the country hostage.”

“My being in the 2027 race does not prevent anyone from contesting. If a vibrant and widely accepted younger candidate emerges, I am willing to step aside,” Atiku stated.

Focus on Nigeria’s Future, Not Personal Ambition

Atiku emphasised that his political mission has always been about offering Nigerians a credible alternative rather than seeking power for its own sake. He urged younger Nigerians to rise to the challenge of leadership and actively participate in the democratic process.

The former Vice President further stressed that if a younger aspirant emerges with broad national support, he would dedicate his political influence and resources to back such a candidate.

Akahi News learnt that Atiku also dismissed insinuations of desperation, reiterating that his primary interest lies in steering Nigeria towards sustainable growth, peace, and unity.

Calls for Youth Participation in Politics

The 78-year-old politician underscored the importance of youth inclusion in governance, noting that Nigeria’s future can only be secured when the younger generation steps forward to assume responsibility.

According to him, the ADC’s strategy for 2027 is to present a candidate who embodies competence, vision, and inclusivity, irrespective of age, while stressing that his experience could still serve as a guiding force for younger politicians.

Political observers told Akahi News that Atiku’s declaration could reshape internal dynamics within the opposition ahead of the election, as it opens the door for strategic negotiations on power transition within the party.

What This Means for 2027

Atiku’s fresh stance signals a possible generational shift in Nigerian politics, especially if younger aspirants succeed in consolidating their base. His position may also energise youth movements, particularly at a time when Nigerians are demanding more innovative and people-oriented leadership.

Analysts believe that Atiku’s conditional readiness to step aside may boost his credibility as a statesman while also compelling political stakeholders to focus on building a coalition strong enough to challenge the ruling party in 2027.
