Atiku’s Ally, Abdulsalami Olaitan, Resigns from PDP in Osun
By Joseph Iyaji | Akahi News
A prominent ally of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Abdulsalami Olaitan, has formally announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State, marking the beginning of what he described as a “new political chapter” in his career.

Olaitan, who once served as the National Coordinator of Umbrella for Every Home and as Secretary of the Atiku Abubakar Southwest Assembly, disclosed his decision in a statement released on Tuesday.
A Reflective Departure
In the statement, the Osun-born politician acknowledged the pivotal role the PDP had played in shaping his political journey. He recalled that the platform gave him valuable opportunities to learn, serve, and collaborate with passionate Nigerians who shared a vision for national development.
“The PDP has been instrumental in my political growth,” Olaitan stated, noting that his active involvement in governorship and presidential campaigns had enriched his experience and broadened his perspective on governance.
While expressing gratitude for the years spent in the party, he emphasised that the time had come to embrace a fresh path guided by conscience, courage, and a renewed sense of purpose.
Not a Retreat but a Transition
Olaitan clarified that his resignation should not be interpreted as a withdrawal from politics, but rather as a transition into a new phase of political engagement.
“This is not a retreat but a step forward into a phase where I can boldly champion the ideals of justice, accountability, and progress,” he said.
Although he did not immediately disclose his next political move, he assured supporters that his commitment to advancing the cause of the people remained unwavering, even in the face of uncertainty.
A Letter to His Ward
In his formal resignation letter addressed to the PDP Ward Chairman, Olaitan reiterated his appreciation to party members for their support and collaboration over the years. He stressed that his political growth would not have been possible without the opportunities provided by the PDP.
He, however, noted that after careful reflection, he had resolved to step aside from active participation in the party’s affairs in order to pursue future endeavours. Olaitan extended his best wishes to the PDP, hoping it would continue to thrive in its mission to deepen democracy in Nigeria.
A Political Career in Transition
Political observers in Osun have described Olaitan’s exit as significant, given his role as a key grassroots mobiliser and strategist in past electoral cycles. His decision is expected to generate interest across party lines, as speculation grows over his next political destination.
For now, Olaitan maintains that his resignation represents not an end, but the start of a new chapter—one defined by boldness, vision, and an unrelenting desire to contribute to Nigeria’s democratic journey.
