Gov. Otu Begins Solar Electrification of 10,000 Homes in Cross River
By Joseph Iyaji | Akahi News
Cross River State Governor, Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu, has flagged off a landmark solar electrification project aimed at providing reliable power to ten thousand (10,000) homes across the state. The initiative, which relies on the Solar Home Systems, is being implemented in phases, with the first installations already underway in Calabar South, Akpabuyo, Abi, and Ogoja local government areas.

Powering Homes, Transforming Communities
The project is designed to bring clean and affordable energy directly to households, many of which have endured decades of unreliable or non-existent power supply. By harnessing renewable energy, the state government seeks to not only close the energy gap but also stimulate grassroots economic activities, improve education, and raise living standards.
According to reports from the pilot LGAs, installation of the solar units is progressing rapidly, with trained technicians working to ensure that each household is connected without delay. For many families, the project represents a long-awaited end to the darkness that has hampered productivity, learning, and safety in rural communities.
Leaders Applaud the Governor’s Vision
Local Government Chairmen from the benefiting areas commended Governor Otu for what they described as intentional and people-centred governance. They noted that the solar electrification scheme reflects the governor’s resolve to prioritise the welfare of ordinary Cross Riverians.
One of the chairmen remarked that the project was more than just an energy programme, calling it “a direct investment in human dignity and community development.”
The Director General of the Cross River State Electrification Agency (CRSEA), Mr. Francis Ekpo, also praised the professionalism and speed of work by the contractors, assuring residents that no local government will be left behind. He explained that while the current phase covers four LGAs, subsequent phases will extend the installations to every part of the state until the target of 10,000 homes is fully achieved.

Partnership for Progress
The solar electrification scheme is being executed through a collaboration between the Cross River State Government and the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), Abuja, with ASolar contracted to handle installations. Officials say the partnership leverages federal expertise and private-sector efficiency to deliver sustainable power solutions.
Experts further highlight that solar home systems have the potential to significantly reduce dependence on fossil fuels, cut household energy costs, and open up new opportunities for rural entrepreneurs, small-scale farmers, and students.
Residents Hail Otu’s ‘Season of Sweetness’
Communities in Calabar South, Akpabuyo, Abi, and Ogoja have embraced the project with enthusiasm, describing it as life-changing. Beneficiaries have testified that access to electricity will improve business operations, enhance children’s education through evening studies, and improve security within neighbourhoods.
Several residents pledged their continued support for Governor Otu, vowing to stand firmly behind his administration beyond 2027. Many noted that the project reaffirms his campaign promise of a “Season of Sweetness,” signalling an era of practical governance that meets the immediate needs of the people.
Looking Ahead
As the installations continue to expand across Cross River State, stakeholders are confident that the solar electrification initiative will serve as a model for other states grappling with power deficits. With its focus on inclusivity and sustainability, the project positions Cross River as a forward-thinking state committed to leveraging renewable energy for long-term development.
For Governor Otu, this initiative is not just about powering homes but about illuminating the path to progress, prosperity, and a brighter future for every Cross Riverian.
