Confirming the development on Monday, the Federal Fire Service (FFS) said its personnel from the National Headquarters swiftly responded to a distress call on Sunday, August 24, 2025. Despite prompt efforts, the victim’s body was recovered from the rubble and later handed over to his family.

The National Public Relations Officer of the Service, DCF PO Abraham, while commiserating with the bereaved family, stressed the urgent need for construction companies to prioritise safety standards.

Rising Cases of Building Collapses in Abuja

This incident adds to the growing list of building collapses in the FCT in recent months. In July 2025, a two-storey building under construction in Gwarinpa collapsed, leaving two workers dead and several others injured. Similarly, in May, a partially completed structure at Jabi caved in during heavy rainfall, trapping workers before emergency responders could reach them.

In March 2025, at least three people reportedly died in Kubwa after another collapse, drawing attention to what experts describe as a worrying trend of substandard construction practices in Abuja.

Experts Raise Alarm Over Regulatory Gaps

Urban development experts and civil society organisations have repeatedly blamed the rising spate of building failures on poor engineering standards, use of substandard materials, and disregard for approved building plans.

Residents have urged the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) and other regulatory agencies to intensify oversight of ongoing construction projects and impose strict sanctions on erring developers to prevent further loss of lives.
