Freedom Band has emerged winner of the senior category at the first dry run of Carnival Calabar 2026, outperforming six other participating bands in the preliminary ranking released after the October rehearsal parade.
The band recorded an average score of 8.5 points and a cumulative total of 25.5 points across three judging locations: Botanical, Scorpio and MCC. Its performance placed it ahead of Calas Vegas and Passion4, which finished second and third, respectively.
According to the published results, Calas Vegas secured 24.5 cumulative points, with an average of 8.2, while Passion4 recorded 23.8 points and an average of 7.9.

The outcome offers an early indication of the competing bands’ performances as Cross River State intensifies preparations for the annual cultural festival, which attracts entertainment lovers, tourists and cultural enthusiasts to Calabar.

Bayside Band and Seagull Band shared fourth position, each recording 23.5 cumulative points and an average score of 7.8. Diamond Band finished fifth with 23.0 points, while Masta Blasta occupied sixth position with 22.0 points.
The published ranking places Freedom Band at the top, although the relatively close scores among several competitors suggest that subsequent rehearsals and preparations could remain important as the carnival season progresses.
The first dry run provides participating bands with an opportunity to assess their performances, refine their presentations and prepare for the main carnival parade.
Carnival Calabar 2026: Beyond Competition and Entertainment
Carnival Calabar remains one of Cross River State’s major cultural and tourism attractions. Beyond the colourful costumes, music, dance and street performances, the festival provides a platform for creative expression and economic activity.
Hotels, restaurants, transport operators, food vendors, costume designers and other small businesses can benefit from increased visitor traffic during the carnival season. The event also creates opportunities for performers and young people working in the creative industry.
For the state government, the challenge is to convert the festival’s popularity into sustainable economic benefits while maintaining its cultural significance and improving the experience of residents and visitors.
The 2026 edition is being held under the theme “Rethinking Our Collective Destiny,” which the organisers have associated with unity, inclusiveness and shared humanity.
Digital Participation and Economic Expectations
Organisers have also highlighted digital participation as part of efforts to broaden public engagement with Carnival Calabar. Plans announced for the 2026 edition include online registration and voting, allowing members of the public to participate more actively in the competition among the carnival bands.
The Cross River State Carnival Commission has also expressed its ambition to increase the festival’s economic contribution beyond the estimated ₦19 billion socio-economic impact reported for the 2025 edition. That figure represents an estimate cited by the organisers and should not be interpreted as government revenue alone.
The extent to which the 2026 festival achieves this ambition will depend on visitor numbers, private-sector participation, spending by tourists and the ability of local businesses to take advantage of the increased commercial activity.
What Freedom Band’s Victory Means
Freedom Band’s first-place finish gives it an encouraging start in the senior category competition. However, the October dry-run result should be understood as a performance ranking for that particular exercise, rather than confirmation of the winner of the main Carnival Calabar parade.
For the competing bands, the rehearsal period offers an opportunity to identify weaknesses, improve coordination and strengthen their presentations before the major event.
As preparations continue, attention will remain on the competing bands, the quality of their performances and the festival’s capacity to promote Cross River State’s cultural heritage while supporting tourism and local enterprise.
Carnival Calabar 2026 is expected to bring together cultural displays, entertainment and tourism activities in a celebration that places Calabar in the national and international spotlight.
Akahi News will continue to provide updates on Carnival Calabar 2026, including developments involving the participating bands and preparations for the main parade.
