Beloved in Christ, today is the Feast of St. Mary Magdalene. In today’s edition of my daily Catholic reflection, we shall learn about the transformative power of Christ’s love, the new creation in Christ, the role of women in the Resurrection story, and the personal encounter with the risen Lord.

My name is Joseph Iyaji and today is Monday, the 22nd day in the Month of July, year 2024.

I titled my reflection for today as “New Beginnings in Christ.”

My dear friends in Christ,

In our first reading of today from 2 Corinthians 5:14-17, we are reminded that Christ’s love compels us to live no longer for ourselves but for Him who died for us and was raised again. This profound truth is at the heart of our Christian faith. When we accept Christ, we become a new creation. The old things pass away, and everything becomes new. This transformative power is not just about a personal change but a call to live a life that reflects the love and sacrifice of Christ.

In our gospel reading of today from John 20:1-2, 11-18, we witness the profound encounter between Mary Magdalene and the risen Lord. Mary, in her grief, initially fails to recognize Jesus, mistaking Him for a gardener. It is only when Jesus calls her by name that she realizes who He is. This moment is deeply significant, highlighting the personal nature of our relationship with Christ. He knows us by name and meets us in our moments of need.

Beloved in Christ,  our readings of today are beautifully packed with the following major lessons:

1. Christ’s Love Compels Us: The love of Christ is a driving force in our lives, urging us to live for Him and not for ourselves (2 Corinthians 5:14-15). This means that our actions, decisions, and attitudes should reflect Christ’s love and sacrifice.

2. New Creation in Christ: Accepting Christ means a complete transformation. We are no longer defined by our past mistakes or failures. In Christ, we are a new creation, and everything becomes new (2 Corinthians 5:17).

3. Role of Women in the Resurrection: Mary Magdalene’s role in the Resurrection story is significant. She is the first to witness the risen Christ and is entrusted with the mission to tell the disciples. This highlights the important role women play in the Christian faith (John 20:18).

4. Personal Encounter with Christ: The encounter between Mary Magdalene and Jesus shows the personal relationship we can have with Christ. He knows us personally and calls us by name, meeting us in our moments of despair and giving us hope (John 20:16).

Beloved, as we reflect on these readings, let us be inspired to live out our faith with a renewed sense of purpose, knowing that we are loved and transformed by Christ.

I pray, may we, like Mary Magdalene, boldly proclaim the good news of the Resurrection and the transformative power of Christ’s love in Jesus’ name. Amen.
