Memorial of the Martyrdom of Saint John the Baptist

Living in Purity and Readiness for the Kingdom

Today, the Church commemorates the Martyrdom of Saint John the Baptist, the fearless forerunner of Christ who chose death rather than compromise with sin. His witness reminds us that fidelity to God’s truth may cost us everything, yet it secures for us eternal life.

In the first reading, Saint Paul exhorts the Thessalonian Christians to embrace holiness by living chastely and avoiding immorality. He reminds them — and us — that God has not called His people to impurity but to holiness. True discipleship is not merely about outward devotion but about a life ordered towards God’s will. Holiness becomes visible when our thoughts, actions, and relationships reflect purity and self-control.

The Gospel presents the parable of the Ten Virgins. Five were wise because they carried extra oil, while five were foolish and unprepared when the bridegroom arrived. This parable is a strong call to spiritual vigilance. The oil represents grace, virtue, and perseverance. It cannot be borrowed or transferred; each person must cultivate it through prayer, charity, sacraments, and faithfulness to God’s commandments.

John the Baptist: A Model of Truth and Courage

The memorial we celebrate today takes us to the dungeon where John the Baptist, imprisoned for speaking the truth about Herod’s unlawful union, chose death over silence. His courage was not rooted in human stubbornness but in fidelity to divine truth. He was the lamp that pointed to Christ, and even in death, he bore witness to the Light of the world.

Like John, Christians today are challenged to remain steadfast in truth, even when it is unpopular or dangerous. Holiness is not passive; it requires the courage to confront sin, resist compromise, and prepare our hearts daily for the coming of Christ.

A Call to Us Today

The readings and the life of John the Baptist urge us to live in readiness. Many people live as though life on earth is permanent, but Christ reminds us to “stay awake, for you know neither the day nor the hour.” Preparation is not about fear but about living faithfully every day so that eternity does not catch us unprepared.

The wise virgins represent those who nourish their souls with prayer, Eucharist, works of mercy, and fidelity to truth. The foolish virgins represent those who neglect their spiritual life, hoping to rely on others when the Lord calls.

As John the Baptist teaches us, the cost of discipleship may be high, but the reward of eternal joy surpasses all earthly loss.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, grant me the wisdom of the wise virgins to remain watchful and faithful until You come. Give me the courage of Saint John the Baptist to witness to the truth without fear, and the purity of heart to live in holiness as Saint Paul exhorts. May my life be a lamp burning with the oil of faith, ready for the eternal banquet. Amen.
