As we journey through the joyful season of Christmas, the Church gently invites us to look beyond the celebration and into the deeper meaning of Christ’s coming. Today’s readings call us to examine our faith not merely as something we profess with our lips, but as something we live out daily through love, obedience, and hope.

In the First Reading, Saint John speaks with remarkable clarity and firmness. He tells us that knowing God is not about words or claims, but about obedience: “Whoever says, ‘I know him,’ but does not keep his commandments, is a liar.” These are strong words, yet they are words of truth and love. Faith, according to John, is authenticated by action. To walk in the light means to love — genuinely, practically, and sacrificially.

The Apostle reminds us that hatred towards a brother or sister is incompatible with life in Christ. Hatred blinds; love enlightens. When love governs our actions, we see clearly, walk securely, and remain rooted in God. This message is particularly relevant in a world wounded by division, suspicion, and indifference. Christianity is not proven by religious labels or outward piety but by a heart that reflects Christ’s love in daily encounters.

The Gospel reading from Luke presents the beautiful and solemn event of the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple. Mary and Joseph, obedient to the Law, bring the Child to Jerusalem. Their quiet obedience reflects deep trust in God’s plan. In the Temple, we meet Simeon — a man of faith, patience, and hope — who had waited his whole life for the fulfilment of God’s promise.

When Simeon takes the Child Jesus into his arms, he recognises what others could not: salvation wrapped in vulnerability. He proclaims Jesus as “a light for revelation to the Gentiles and the glory of Israel.” Yet, he also foretells suffering — that this Child will be a sign of contradiction and that a sword will pierce Mary’s soul.

Here, joy and sorrow meet. Light and suffering coexist. True discipleship, the Gospel reminds us, is not free from pain, but it is always filled with purpose. Following Christ means accepting that obedience may cost us comfort, popularity, or certainty — but it will never rob us of meaning or hope.

As we reflect on these readings, we are invited to ask ourselves:
Do my actions reflect my profession of faith?
Do I walk in the light, or do I cling to hidden darkness?
Am I willing to trust God even when His plans unfold through sacrifice?

Like Simeon, may we recognise Christ when He comes — often quietly, unexpectedly, and humbly. Like Mary and Joseph, may we obey even when the road ahead is unclear. And like Saint John teaches, may our love be the proof that we truly belong to God.

Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ,
You are the Light that dispels all darkness.
Teach me to walk in your truth and to love without pretence.
Grant me the grace to obey your word even when it challenges my comfort.
May my life reflect your light so that others may encounter you through me.
Amen.
