Power Is Not Given on a Platter, It Is Earned — Wike Warns Rivers Politicians

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared that political power is neither accidental nor charitable, insisting that it is earned through strength, structure, and strategic political action, while warning that Obio/Akpor Local Government Area remains a decisive force in Rivers State politics.

Wike also firmly dismissed calls for his removal from office, stressing that only the President of Nigeria has the constitutional authority to sack him, not political opponents or pressure groups.

The former Rivers State governor made the remarks on Sunday during a thank-you visit to Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, where he addressed party leaders, traditional rulers, women, and youths, drawing loud reactions from supporters.

According to reports monitored by Akahi News, Wike used the occasion to reiterate his long-held stance that political relevance is sustained by grassroots strength and loyalty, not noise on social media.

“Political power is not served on a platter. You must work for it, defend it, and sustain it. Obio/Akpor has always been the backbone of political structure in Rivers State,” Wike said.

He described Obio/Akpor as a political stronghold that consistently determines electoral outcomes in Rivers State, warning that no serious political calculation in the state can succeed without the support of the area.

Addressing ongoing calls by critics demanding his removal as FCT minister, Wike dismissed them as empty threats.

“Those calling for my removal should understand one thing clearly: only the President who appointed me has the power to remove me. Nobody else,” he stated.

Wike’s visit forms part of a broader political tour across Rivers State, as he continues to visit all 23 local government areas to appreciate residents for their support during the 2023 general elections and to mobilise grassroots backing for President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential polls.

Political analysts who spoke with Akahi News note that Wike’s statements further underline his intention to remain a dominant political force in Rivers politics, despite ongoing tensions within the state’s political landscape.

The tour has continued to attract massive crowds, signalling that Wike still commands significant influence across Rivers State, particularly at the grassroots level.
