CDS Links Rising Killings to 2027 Elections, Warns of Politicians’ Role and Foreign Arms Influx

By Joseph Iyaji | Akahi News

Nigeria’s security situation has once again come under sharp focus as the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has revealed that the surge in killings, kidnappings, and violent crimes across the country is closely tied to the build-up to the 2027 general elections.

Akahi News learnt that General Musa made this disclosure while speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today. He warned that politicians desperate for power are fuelling insecurity by sponsoring violence, while criminal gangs are taking advantage of the tense political climate to expand their operations.

According to him, the disturbing escalation in bloodshed is not only politically motivated but is also being reinforced by a steady inflow of foreign arms, fighters, and illicit cash from neighbouring Sahel countries. This combination, he noted, has emboldened terrorists and bandits who now work together with the sole aim of destabilising communities and making money.

Politicians and Insecurity

Akahi News gathered that this is not the first time suspicions have been raised about politicians exploiting insecurity for selfish purposes. Ahead of past elections, similar concerns were voiced regarding the sudden rise in attacks, clashes, and targeted killings. General Musa’s revelation has therefore renewed public debate about the role of political actors in sustaining Nigeria’s worsening crisis.

Observers believe that some politicians see violence as a tool to weaken rivals, intimidate communities, and influence voter turnout. This trend, if unchecked, could pose a serious threat to national stability and the credibility of the 2027 elections.

Foreign Influence and Arms Proliferation

Another dimension highlighted by the CDS is the porous nature of Nigeria’s northern borders, which has made it easy for arms smugglers and mercenaries from Sahel nations to infiltrate the country. Akahi News learnt that these foreign fighters often link up with local criminal gangs, creating a dangerous network of violence that complicates security operations.

The steady flow of sophisticated weapons into Nigeria has also made clashes deadlier, with many communities caught in the crossfire. Analysts fear that unless urgent measures are taken, the coming years could witness even more widespread violence.

Call for National Action

Civil society groups and political observers are already urging the Federal Government to act on the CDS’s revelation. There are growing calls for greater accountability, especially in scrutinising politicians who may be backing or benefiting from violence. State governors have also stressed the need for more security personnel, intelligence-driven strategies, and technology-based solutions to contain the crisis.

Akahi News gathered that stakeholders are warning against allowing insecurity to be politicised as the country heads towards another crucial election cycle. They insist that national security must remain above partisan interests.

What This Means for 2027

General Musa’s warning has raised the stakes ahead of the elections. If political sponsorship of violence continues unchecked, Nigeria risks sliding into deeper instability. The 2027 polls are already shaping up to be highly competitive, and the current wave of killings may be an early indicator of the fierce battle for power.

For many Nigerians, the statement from the nation’s top defence chief is a wake-up call. It highlights the urgent need for transparency, stronger border security, and depoliticised security agencies to protect lives and uphold the country’s democratic process.
