Central Bank Governor Links Government Food Purchases to Soaring Inflation in Nigeria

Olayemi Cardoso, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has pointed to significant government purchases of foodstuffs intended as palliatives as a primary contributor to the escalating food inflation rates across Nigeria. These comments were made during his address at the March Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting, the details of which are now published on the CBN’s official website.

In an effort to combat rising inflation, the MPC has raised the benchmark interest rate to an unprecedented 24.75%, up from 22.75%. This decision aligns with the committee’s ongoing commitment to a hawkish fiscal stance aimed squarely at inflation control.

Despite these efforts, Nigeria’s overall inflation rate soared to 33.2% in March, marking a significant rise from the previous year. Food inflation has been particularly alarming, hitting a staggering 40.01%, which represents a year-on-year increase of 15.56 percentage points from the 24.45% recorded in March 2023.

The National Bureau of Statistics attributes this surge in food prices to increased costs for staples such as garri, millet, yam tuber, and water yam, among others. This price hike follows the recent removal of fuel subsidies by the federal government, which also approved a N5bn allocation for each state and the Federal Capital Territory. This funding is intended to facilitate the procurement of food items for distribution to economically disadvantaged populations within these regions.

As Nigeria grapples with these economic challenges, the statements from the CBN Governor underscore the complex dynamics between governmental intervention in the food supply and the broader implications for inflation and monetary policy.
