Benue Set for Oil Palm Industry Revamp

Benue State is on the verge of a major agricultural breakthrough as a delegation of Chinese investors has announced plans to partner with the state government on the Alia Palm Project. The initiative, aimed at revitalising Benue’s oil palm industry, is expected to create jobs, boost revenue, and empower local farmers across the state.

The investors, with a track record in large-scale agro-industrial ventures across Asia and Africa, described Benue’s fertile land and favourable climate as ideal for oil palm cultivation. They expressed confidence that the project would deliver sustainable economic benefits for the state and its people.

Government’s Commitment to the Project

Governor Hyacinth Alia, represented by his Special Adviser on Foreign Investment, Hon. Addingi Alex, confirmed that discussions with the investors have been positive, noting that the partnership signals a new era for Benue’s agricultural sector.

According to Hon. Alex, the Alia Palm Project will involve extensive oil palm plantations, the establishment of modern processing facilities, and full value-chain development to ensure maximum returns.

“We are committed to providing land, infrastructure, and policies that make Benue a preferred destination for agro-industrial investment, while protecting the interests of our local communities,” he assured.

Job Creation and Farmer Empowerment

Plans for the project include setting up high-yield nurseries and introducing farmer training programmes on modern cultivation methods. Agricultural experts believe these measures could transform Benue into one of Nigeria’s top palm oil-producing states, strengthening food security and rural livelihoods.

The Alia Palm Project is also expected to attract ancillary businesses, creating new economic opportunities along the entire production chain — from cultivation and processing to marketing and export.

Looking Ahead

With talks between the Benue State Government and the Chinese investors advancing rapidly, stakeholders are optimistic that the Alia Palm Project will become a model for agricultural-industrial partnerships in Nigeria.
