Court Orders Nnamdi Kanu to Open Defence as Sowore Urges South-East Leaders to Intervene
By Joseph Iyaji | Akahi News
The Federal High Court in Abuja has ruled that the prosecution has established a prima facie case against the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, compelling him to enter his defence in the ongoing treasonable felony trial.

According to the court’s ruling, the prosecution successfully presented sufficient evidence, including testimony from five witnesses, linking Kanu to the alleged offences for which he is being tried.
Court Awaits Medical Report from NMA
The presiding judge adjourned the matter to October 8, pending a detailed report from the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) on Kanu’s current health condition. The report is expected to guide the scheduling and modalities for subsequent hearings.
The court’s decision marks a crucial phase in a legal battle that has spanned several years and has remained a major flashpoint in Nigeria’s socio-political discourse, particularly in the South-East region.
Renewed Calls for Political Intervention
Following the court’s ruling, Omoyele Sowore, human rights activist and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), renewed his call on South-East leaders to actively intervene in the prolonged detention of Kanu.
Sowore stressed that the continued incarceration of the IPOB leader has worsened tensions in the region and deepened mistrust between the federal government and the Igbo populace.
“It is time for South-East leaders to rise above politics and demand justice for their son. Keeping Kanu behind bars indefinitely does not serve the cause of peace or national unity,” Sowore said in a statement reported by Akahi News.
Kanu’s Detention: A Lingering National Debate
Nnamdi Kanu has been in custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since 2021 following his controversial extradition to Nigeria from Kenya. He faces multiple charges, including treasonable felony, terrorism-related offences, and incitement.
While the Federal Government insists that Kanu’s trial must run its full legal course, many groups in the South-East argue that his prolonged detention violates his fundamental human rights and fuels regional unrest.
Observers say Kanu’s health concerns have added a humanitarian dimension to the case, intensifying calls for either his release or fair treatment under the law.
Growing Political and Social Pressure
Kanu’s case continues to attract both domestic and international attention, with several rights organisations urging the Nigerian government to ensure transparency and due process.
Analysts believe that the outcome of this case could have far-reaching implications for Nigeria’s democratic image and its handling of separatist movements.
As the court awaits the NMA’s health report ahead of the October 8 session, tensions remain high, with many Nigerians — particularly in the South-East — watching closely to see whether the justice system will act with fairness and compassion in this politically charged trial.
