Tense Moments as Amotekun Chief Escapes Assassination Attempt in Osogbo

The Commander of the Osun State Amotekun Corps, High Chief Dr. Hon. Adekunle Isaac Omoyele, narrowly escaped death on Monday night after unidentified masked gunmen ambushed and opened fire on his vehicle in Osogbo, the state capital.

According to information obtained by Akahi News, the shocking incident occurred around 10:05 p.m. along Ikirun Road, near Kobo, beside Charity Hotel — a few minutes after Omoyele reportedly closed from work at the Amotekun Corps Headquarters.

Eyewitnesses and preliminary reports revealed that the attack bore the hallmarks of a coordinated assassination attempt, leaving residents and security operatives deeply concerned about the rising wave of insecurity across Osun State.

“They Shot at My Car Multiple Times” — Omoyele Recounts from Hospital Bed

Speaking from his hospital bed under tight security, Omoyele recounted his harrowing encounter.

“I had just left the office in my two-door vehicle when I noticed a car moving suspiciously beside mine. Suddenly, masked men began firing at my car. Their faces were covered, and bullets riddled my vehicle. I didn’t stop — I kept driving despite being hit. I thank God for sparing my life,” he narrated.

Medical sources confirmed to Akahi News that the Amotekun Commander sustained gunshot wounds and is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed medical facility in Osogbo. His condition was described as stable, though he remains under close observation.

Attackers Stormed His Residence After Failed Assassination

In a disturbing turn of events, about 15 masked men reportedly stormed Omoyele’s private residence later that same night. Residents of the area told Akahi News that the assailants arrived in a Hilux van and a Toyota Highlander SUV, firing sporadically before retreating after a failed attempt to gain entry.

The back-to-back attacks have raised serious questions about the motive and possible masterminds behind the incident. Security experts who spoke with Akahi News believe the assault was premeditated and possibly connected to ongoing tensions surrounding Amotekun operations in parts of the state.

Government Confirms Attack, Moves to Strengthen Security

The Osun State Government has officially confirmed the attack on the Amotekun Commander. The Chief Press Secretary to Governor Ademola Adeleke, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, stated that the Commissioner for Information had visited the Commander in hospital.

“We can confirm the attack on the Osun Amotekun Commander. The Commissioner for Information has gone to visit him at the hospital. The Governor has also directed security agencies to intensify efforts to track down the perpetrators,” Rasheed said.

Governor Adeleke, Akahi News gathered, had only days earlier ordered a comprehensive investigation into a separate violent clash in Akinlalu involving Amotekun operatives that led to loss of lives. The Governor had expressed deep concern over the incident and vowed to get to the root of the matter.

Amotekun Under Fire: A Pattern of Targeted Violence?

Observers believe the attack on Omoyele might not be isolated. It follows a series of tense encounters between local communities and the Amotekun Corps across the South-West. Analysts say such targeted violence could be linked to ongoing frictions between security agencies and criminal networks threatened by Amotekun’s growing operations.

Security analysts who spoke to Akahi News noted that the assault underscores the urgent need for coordinated intelligence sharing between local vigilante units, police, and military formations in the state.

“This is a dangerous trend. Once criminals begin targeting security leaders, it signals a direct attack on the morale of the entire outfit. The state must respond decisively,” one security analyst observed.

Police Yet to Comment as Investigation Deepens

Efforts by Akahi News to reach the Osun State Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojolabi, proved abortive as calls and text messages to his official line were unanswered. However, a senior police source who requested anonymity said detectives have begun trailing the suspects and reviewing CCTV footage from nearby facilities.

Meanwhile, residents of Osogbo and surrounding areas have expressed fear over the boldness of the attack, urging authorities to deploy more security personnel to flashpoints across the state.

Growing Insecurity and Implications for Local Defence Corps

The ambush has reignited public discourse about the safety of personnel in regional security outfits such as Amotekun. Many Nigerians have continued to question whether enough logistical and intelligence support is being provided to protect officers tasked with defending their communities.

Security experts told Akahi News that without proper intelligence networks and inter-agency collaboration, even well-trained commanders could remain vulnerable to criminal ambushes like this.

Governor’s Next Move

Governor Adeleke is expected to convene an emergency security council meeting this week to review recent security breaches and issue directives on enhanced surveillance, especially around key Amotekun command posts.

A top government insider told Akahi News that the state may soon launch a “Targeted Protection Programme” for senior security officials, including armoured patrol reinforcements and improved communication gadgets.

The attack on Commander Adekunle Omoyele serves as a grim reminder that those on the frontline of community security are themselves under siege. While he remains alive and recovering, the brazenness of the assault highlights the growing sophistication of criminal elements in the region.

As investigations continue, residents and security stakeholders will be watching closely to see whether Osun State can effectively restore public confidence in its security architecture.
