C’River Commissioner Tasks Headteachers on Renewed Commitment to Boost Pupils’ Enrolment Ahead of Resumption
The Cross River State Commissioner for Education, Senator Professor Stephen Odey, Esq., has charged headteachers in the Yache zone to demonstrate heightened commitment to duty and intensify efforts aimed at improving pupils’ enrolment ahead of the forthcoming academic term.
Professor Odey issued the charge on Friday, January 2, 2026, during a New Year engagement at his Okuku residence, where he hosted headteachers drawn from his ward. Akahi News gathered that the meeting formed part of the Commissioner’s broader efforts to galvanise school administrators at the grassroots level ahead of resumption.

Emphasis on Quality, Order and Professionalism
Addressing the headteachers, the Commissioner underscored the centrality of quality teaching and effective school management in attracting and retaining pupils. He noted that a clean, secure, and well-organised school environment remains a powerful incentive for parents when making enrolment decisions for their children and wards.
According to him, professionalism, dedication to duty, accurate record-keeping, and sustained improvement in enrolment figures must remain non-negotiable standards for headteachers across the state. Akahi News learnt that Professor Odey warned that failure to meet these expectations would attract sanctions, in line with established government policies.
Government’s Resolve to Strengthen Basic Education
The Commissioner reiterated the unwavering commitment of Governor Bassey Otu’s administration to revitalising the basic education sector through enhanced accountability and improved service delivery. He urged headteachers to recognise their strategic role as frontline drivers of educational development, particularly at the community level where foundational learning takes root.
Observers noted that the Commissioner’s message aligns with the state government’s broader agenda to reposition public primary education as a credible and attractive option for families across Cross River State.
Headteachers Pledge Renewed Commitment
In their response, the headteachers present expressed appreciation for the Commissioner’s guidance and leadership. They assured him of their renewed dedication to duty, pledging to work assiduously to improve teaching standards, maintain conducive learning environments, and significantly boost pupils’ enrolment in their respective schools.
Akahi News gathered that the engagement ended on a note of mutual resolve, with both the Commissioner and the headteachers affirming their shared responsibility in advancing educational outcomes across the Yache zone.
