Armed men suspected to be members of a cult group on Friday evening reportedly unleashed violence in Ogidi community, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, leaving at least two persons dead, including the President General of the community, Chief Ikwuka Okoye.
Violence Erupts in Ogidi Community
Reports indicate that the attackers, believed to be linked to the Neo-Black Movement, popularly known as Aye, invaded parts of the community, injuring several residents during the attack. Akahi News gathered that the assailants allegedly targeted specific individuals, leading to the killing of the community leader and another yet-to-be-identified victim.

Eyewitness accounts suggest that the incident caused panic across the area as residents fled for safety while the gunmen reportedly operated for some time before escaping.
Alleged Revenge Attack Linked to Earlier Arrest
According to information obtained by Akahi News, the violence may be connected to the earlier apprehension and controversial death of a suspected cult member identified as Emma Amasco, said to be about 25 years old.
Newsmen reported that the suspect was allegedly involved in robbery activities in Onitsha earlier in the week before being apprehended after attempting to dispose of stolen items. He was reportedly brought back to Ogidi following requests by community authorities determined to curb cult-related activities and violent crimes.
Sources claimed that during interrogation, the suspect allegedly made confessional statements linking himself to multiple crimes. However, the circumstances surrounding his death reportedly remain unclear, a development believed to have triggered threats of reprisal from suspected associates.
Police Confirm Killing, Begin Investigation
The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the killing of Chief Okoye and assured residents that efforts are ongoing to apprehend those responsible. In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, the command expressed condolences to the community and acknowledged a possible connection between the incident and recent developments involving the suspected cultist.
The police stated that operatives had taken over the scene and commenced investigations, working with eyewitness accounts and intelligence reports to track down the perpetrators.
The command further urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement agencies while investigations continue.
Renewed Concerns Over Cult-Related Violence
Observers note that the latest incident highlights persistent concerns over cult-related violence in parts of Anambra State and the wider South-East region. Community leaders and security analysts have repeatedly warned that reprisals linked to cult clashes often escalate quickly when not decisively addressed.
Analysts believe that sustained collaboration between security agencies and community leaders remains crucial in addressing the underlying causes of such violence and preventing further loss of lives.
The killing of a community leader in Ogidi has once again drawn attention to the dangers posed by organised cult groups and the fragile security situation in some urban communities. As investigations continue, residents hope that swift action by security agencies will restore calm and deter further violence.
