Dr. Betta Edu Calls for Intergenerational Collaboration, Inclusive Policies at NASoW 50th Anniversary Conference

Former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu, has urged Nigerians to strengthen intergenerational collaboration, build inclusive policies, and establish structured mentorship frameworks to create a more resilient and equitable society.

Edu made the call in her keynote address at the Golden Jubilee Conference of the Nigeria Association of Social Workers (NASoW) held in Osogbo, Osun State. The conference, themed “Strengthening Intergenerational Solidarity for Enduring Wellbeing,” marks 50 years of professional social work practice in Nigeria.

A Call for Unity Across Generations

Speaking virtually, Dr. Edu congratulated NASoW on its milestone, describing the anniversary as “a celebration of compassion, professionalism, and national development.”

“This celebration is not just about the years; it is about the people — the countless social workers whose resilience and dedication have shaped lives and communities across Nigeria,” she stated in a message shared with PUNCH Online on Thursday.

Edu stressed that intergenerational solidarity is key to addressing emerging demographic and social realities, noting that the global population of people aged 60 and above has now surpassed the number of children under five.

“No single generation can tackle today’s global challenges alone,” she said. “When older and younger generations collaborate, we combine wisdom with innovation, experience with energy — and that synergy can transform societies.”

Building a Future of Inclusion and Mentorship

Drawing inspiration from the late Nobel Laureate Dr. Wangari Maathai, Edu highlighted the need to foster a culture of intergenerational equity that considers both present and future generations.

She called on policymakers and stakeholders to design mentorship frameworks that bridge generational gaps and promote leadership continuity within Nigeria’s development agenda.

“Our policies must be age-inclusive — protecting the elderly, empowering the young, and building bridges of understanding between them,” she added. “Intergenerational solidarity is not just a social concept; it is a national strategy for enduring wellbeing.”

Edu further emphasised that meaningful progress often emerges when “youth-led initiatives work hand-in-hand with experienced professionals,” citing global examples in climate action and peacebuilding efforts.

NASoW Celebrates 50 Years of Service and Impact

NASoW President, Alhaji Moshood Mustapha, described the association’s five-decade journey as one of “dedication, compassion, and resilience” in advancing social welfare and national development.

He reiterated that social workers play a critical role in protecting children, empowering women, and supporting vulnerable groups across the country, adding that the golden jubilee theme reflects the profession’s commitment to inclusive wellbeing.

“Emerging challenges such as poverty, inequality, mental health issues, and social exclusion require renewed energy, creativity, and collaboration among practitioners and policymakers,” Mustapha said.

He also urged that social workers’ voices remain central in shaping Nigeria’s social and developmental policies.

Standing Ovation for Edu’s Support

In a special tribute, NASoW members honoured Dr. Edu with a standing ovation, applauding her unwavering support for the profession. Mustapha described her as “a true friend of NASoW” whose passion and consistency have strengthened social welfare initiatives nationwide.

Speakers at the conference echoed that social workers are not merely caregivers but nation builders whose contributions are vital to achieving a just and inclusive society.
