Addressing attendees at the festival, Dr Agbor, who served as the Chief Host, underscored the critical role of education in shaping societies and driving progress. He emphasised that his scholarship initiative was not only to assist individual students but also to complement the efforts of Governor Bassey Edet Otu’s administration in advancing education, health, and infrastructure under the “People First” mandate.

“Education remains the bedrock of every society,” Dr Agbor said. “Through this initiative, we aim to build human capacity, foster community growth, and empower the next generation to take their rightful place in nation-building.”

Annual Festival to Honour Umung Heritage

The Umung Cultural Festival, which celebrates the rich traditions of the Umung people, also serves as a platform for fostering unity and preserving cultural heritage. Dr Agbor revealed that the festival would now be institutionalised as an annual event to hold every first Sunday of September, with plans to transform it into an international cultural showcase in the near future.

He called on government agencies, private organisations, and philanthropic individuals to partner in expanding the scope of the festival to boost tourism, cultural pride, and economic opportunities within the region.

Commendations and Beneficiaries’ Reactions

Speaking on behalf of the scholarship committee, the President of the National Association of Obudu Students (NAOS-WW), who represented the chairman, described Dr Agbor’s gesture as “humanistic ingenuity” and pledged continued support for the programme to ensure its sustainability.

Some of the scholarship beneficiaries expressed heartfelt appreciation, promising to utilise the funds judiciously to advance their academic pursuits and contribute positively to society in the future.

Cultural Highlights and Side Attractions

The 2025 Umung Cultural Festival featured a colourful display of cultural heritage, including the official unveiling of the Utugwang cultural attire by the Clan Heads of Ukworogung and Nkirira. Traditional dances, artistic performances, and a novelty football match added to the excitement, with winning teams receiving trophies and cash prizes.

The festival reaffirmed its role as a unifying platform for the Umung people, blending cultural pride with educational advancement to foster holistic community development.
