Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala Delivers Pre-Convocation Lecture at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria

Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, marked a significant milestone on Saturday, 31st January 2026, as it hosted its 45th Pre-Convocation Lecture, featuring Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), as one of the distinguished guest speakers. The event, attended by top university officials, faculty, students, and dignitaries, highlighted the university’s commitment to academic excellence and global engagement.

Prestigious Honor for Dr. Okonjo-Iweala

In recognition of her remarkable contributions to global trade, economic policy, and sustainable development, ABU awarded Dr. Okonjo-Iweala a Doctor of Science, Honoris Causa. The World Trade Organisation chief expressed her gratitude for the honor, describing ABU as “one of Nigeria’s oldest and best established universities.”

Dr. Okonjo-Iweala also shared her excitement about addressing the students and the broader university community, noting the warm reception she received. “Thanks to the Chancellor of the University, His Majesty, Obi of Onitsha, Nnaemeka Alfred Ugochukuwu Achebe; the Chair of the Governing Council, Alhaji Mahmud Yayale Ahmed; the Vice Chancellor, Prof Adamu Ahmed; faculty and staff — but most of all to the students for a rousing welcome,” she said.

Lecture Focus: Africa and Nigeria in a Changing Global Context

Her lecture, titled “Challenges and Opportunities for Africa and Nigeria in the Present Global Geopolitical and Geostrategic Context,” explored the evolving international landscape and its implications for Nigeria and the African continent. She highlighted key areas including trade, economic development, governance, and regional cooperation, emphasising both the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.

Dr. Okonjo-Iweala urged students and young leaders to embrace innovation, global partnerships, and strategic thinking to position Africa as a competitive player on the world stage. She stressed the importance of policies that encourage sustainable economic growth while navigating complex global dynamics.
