EFCC Arraigns Entertainment CEO Over Alleged ₦16.8 Million Dud Cheque: Why Financial Integrity Matters in Business

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned the Chief Executive Officer of Ski Hi-Entertainment, Ifeanyichukwu Ogbu, before the Enugu State High Court over allegations bordering on the issuance of dud cheques valued at approximately ₦16.8 million. Akahi News gathered that the anti-graft agency accused the businessman of issuing cheques that were allegedly dishonoured due to insufficient funds after they were presented for payment. The defendant pleaded not guilty, while the court adjourned the matter for the hearing of his bail application.

According to the EFCC, the case arose from a business transaction involving hotel accommodation for members of three Nigeria Premier Football League clubs. The commission alleged that although part of the debt was paid, the outstanding balance was covered with cheques that were later returned unpaid. The allegations are yet to be proven in court.

Akahi News believes this case underscores one of the most valuable assets in business—credibility.

Whether in entertainment, sports, hospitality or any other industry, commercial relationships depend largely on trust. When payment disputes escalate into criminal proceedings, the reputational consequences can be significant regardless of the eventual outcome of the case.

ii. A Dud Cheque Is More Than a Failed Transaction

Many people view a bounced cheque as merely a business disagreement.

However, Nigerian law treats the deliberate issuance of a dishonoured cheque under certain circumstances as a criminal offence because it can undermine confidence in commercial transactions. That is why businesses are expected to ensure that sufficient funds are available before issuing cheques as payment.

iii. Due Process Must Be Allowed to Take Its Course

Akahi News notes that the defendant has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

This means the allegations remain subject to judicial determination. It is therefore important for the public to avoid rushing to conclusions, as only the court can determine criminal liability after considering all the available evidence.

iv. The Case Highlights the Importance of Proper Financial Management

Businesses of every size should maintain sound financial discipline.

Good cash-flow management, transparent accounting and honest communication with business partners can help prevent disputes from escalating into legal battles that may damage both finances and reputation.

v. Strong Commercial Ethics Strengthen the Economy

An economy functions best when contracts are honoured and financial commitments are fulfilled.

When businesses have confidence that agreements will be respected and the law will address disputes fairly, investors are more willing to engage in commercial activities. Upholding financial integrity therefore benefits not only individual businesses but also the wider economy.

What This Means for Nigerians

This case serves as a reminder to entrepreneurs, business owners and corporate executives that financial obligations should be handled responsibly.

It also demonstrates the role of law enforcement agencies and the judiciary in ensuring that commercial disputes involving alleged criminal conduct are addressed through lawful processes rather than public speculation.

Akahi News believes the case highlights the importance of honesty, accountability and financial discipline in business transactions.

As the court continues its proceedings, every party deserves a fair hearing in accordance with the law.
