IPOB Leader Nnamdi Kanu Appeals to International Bodies Over Detention

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has petitioned a wide array of international bodies and foreign embassies over his continued detention by the Nigerian government.
Kanu’s petition, signed by IPOB’s Special Counsel Aloy Ejimakor, requests urgent intervention from countries including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, France, Norway, Japan, Israel, and several others, as well as organisations such as the European Union, ECOWAS Court, Amnesty International, and the Red Cross.
In the petition, Kanu calls on the international community to ensure Nigeria upholds constitutional supremacy and respects the rule of law, warning against the consequences of judicial lawlessness. He wrote, “The Supreme Court’s lawlessness, compounded by the Court of Appeal’s illegal stay of execution, undermines the rule of law, and I seek your assistance to restore justice.”
The petition outlines specific demands, including:
- Enforcement of the Court of Appeal’s discharge retroactively to October 13, 2022, to nullify his detention.
- Declaration that the October 28, 2022, stay of execution is illegal.
- Recognition that the Supreme Court’s December 15, 2023, reversal and Court of Appeal’s stay constitute violations of stare decisis, constitutional supremacy, and international protections under ICCPR and ECHR.
- Invocation of emergency diplomatic actions, including potential sanctions under the Magnitsky Act, against officials complicit in his detention.
- Referral to regional or international courts, including ECOWAS, African Court, or ICC, should Nigeria refuse compliance.
Kanu emphasised the urgency of intervention, citing the systemic collapse of the rule of law and the risk to his life due to prolonged detention, describing it as “discriminatory neglect and judicial lawlessness.”
