EFCC Arrests 93 Suspected Internet Fraudsters in Ogun as OOPL Alleges Armed Invasion by Commission’s Operatives

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Lagos Zonal Directorate 2, has confirmed the arrest of 93 suspected internet fraudsters in Abeokuta, Ogun State, during a sting operation on Sunday, August 10, 2025.

According to the Commission, the operation followed credible intelligence linking the suspects to various internet-related crimes. Upon arrest, operatives reportedly recovered 18 vehicles and several mobile devices believed to have been used in fraudulent activities. The EFCC disclosed that the suspects will be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.

While the anti-graft agency recorded this high-profile operation, controversy erupted elsewhere over an incident also linked to EFCC operatives. The management of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Abeokuta, issued a strongly worded statement on Sunday alleging that its premises were invaded in the early hours of the same day by over 50 heavily armed men claiming to be EFCC personnel.

According to the OOPL, the incident occurred around 2 a.m. during a private, widely advertised event at the facility’s amusement area. The invasion, allegedly led by one “Olapade,” involved sporadic gunfire, threats to kill attendees, and scenes of panic that left several people injured as they scrambled for safety.

Mr Vitalis Ortese, Managing Director of OOPL, said that when contacted by phone, the alleged leader of the operation claimed it was based on intelligence and that the police had been duly informed. However, OOPL maintains that both police officers stationed at its gates and additional officers from Kemta Police Station — deployed for the event — confirmed they were unaware of any EFCC operation and that no warrant was presented.

OOPL condemned the incident as a “clear invasion of private property” and a violation of the rights of both the organisation and individuals present. The management has demanded an explanation and a formal apology from the EFCC, warning that failure to do so would prompt legal action and the pursuit of sanctions.

“The Management has commenced its investigations of the invasion and will take up the matter with the highest authorities, including the EFCC, the Police, and the Department of State Security,” the statement read.

As the EFCC continues to face public scrutiny over its methods, these two incidents — one involving a major anti-cybercrime crackdown and the other an alleged unauthorised armed incursion — have sparked debate over the Commission’s operational conduct and accountability.
