By Joseph Iyaji | Akahi News
The Zuru Emirate in Kebbi State has been thrown into mourning following the death of its revered monarch, Major General Muhammadu Sani Sami (Rtd.), popularly known as Gomo II. The traditional ruler, who ascended the throne in the mid-1990s, passed away in a London hospital after a brief illness. He was 81.

Confirming the sad development, the Kebbi State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Garba Umar-Dutsinmari, said the government received the news of the Emir’s passing with deep sorrow. He described the late Emir as a highly respected leader whose legacy of discipline, service, and commitment to his people would remain evergreen.
“The government extends its condolences to his immediate family, the Zuru Emirate Council, the people of Zuru, and the entire state. We pray to Almighty Allah to forgive his shortcomings and grant him Jannatul Firdaus,” the statement read.
A Distinguished Military and Traditional Career
Born in 1943, Muhammadu Sani Sami dedicated much of his early life to the Nigerian Army, where he rose through the ranks with distinction, attaining the position of Major General before his retirement. His military career earned him respect across the country, particularly for his discipline and professionalism.
Following his retirement from active service, he returned to his community and was installed as the Emir of Zuru in the mid-1990s. For nearly three decades, he presided over the affairs of the Emirate, promoting peace, unity, and development across Zuru and its environs. His reign, according to residents, was marked by stability, respect for tradition, and a strong advocacy for education and youth development.
Condolences From Across the State
Tributes have continued to pour in from prominent figures within and outside Kebbi State. Senator Bala Ibn Na’Allah, in a condolence statement signed by his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Muhammad Danjarida, described the Emir as a noble leader whose reign brought dignity and pride to the Zuru people.
“This is a painful loss not only to the Zuru Emirate but to Kebbi State and Nigeria at large. The late Emir distinguished himself both in military service and in traditional leadership. His memory will remain a source of inspiration to all,” Senator Na’Allah stated.
The Zuru Emirate Council has also expressed deep grief, noting that the Emir was not only a father figure but also a unifying force in the region. Community leaders emphasised that his contributions to peace-building, inter-community dialogue, and cultural preservation would remain a lasting legacy.
Survived by Family and Community Legacy
The late monarch is survived by four wives and seven children, as well as a large community of loyal subjects who regarded him as a symbol of wisdom and integrity. Plans for his funeral rites are expected to be announced by the Zuru Emirate Council in collaboration with the Kebbi State Government.
As the Emirate mourns, residents of Zuru and beyond continue to pay tribute, highlighting his humility, generosity, and unwavering commitment to the well-being of his people. His passing marks the end of an era for Zuru Emirate, leaving behind a vacuum that will be difficult to fill.
